Introduction

Tachis was very philosophical this evening. He made many interesting points, one of which was that wood is a thing of life, stainless steel makes wine "incazzato". The wine suffocates without oxygen.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

1991 Antinori Tignanello Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
89 points
This was the last Tignanello actually made by Tachis (80% Sangiovese, 15% Cab Sauv, 5% Cab Franc). . Garnet, clear, with fine dark sediment settling in the bottom of glass. On nose, major notes of earth and seaside; minor notes of cherries and berries. Developed some balsamic notes with time in the glass. On palate, very acidic, firm tannins, moderate alcohol, very little fruit but ample minerality and earthiness. Good body, moderate length and complexity. Slightly past prime, it won’t get better.
Red
1999 Falchini Campora Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
91 points
Dark ruby core, garnet rim, dense. Very potent on nose, with rich red fruit, heavy minerality, clean earth and oak, roasted/sugared nuts. Aromatically, it continued to evolve nicely in the glass. On palate – yum – same as nose, with more savouriness; high level of ripe/smooth tannins, high acidity, good use of oak. Super concentrated, full-bodied, rich and opulent. Nicely complex; moderate in length (a little short at the mid palate).

2003 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
95 points
Ruby, opaque. On nose, warm and sultry, with dark fruits, rich earthiness and soft minerality. On palate, earth, roses, wood and red fruits; high level of firm/ripe tannins; moderate acidity and alcohol. Medium body but nicely concentrated; great complexity and length. Best at first opening (no need to oxygenate). 95

2003 Argiolas Turriga Isola dei Nuraghi IGT Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
91 points
Dark purple, dense. On nose, very fruity and floral, with violets, ripe blackberries, mulberries, cherry-vanilla cola. On palate, nicely textured, chewy tannins, high but good acidity, a touch of sweetness (~2 g/L). Rich, full-bodied, long and complex. Slightly unclean at the finish, or maybe it’s just some minor earthy notes making their appearance. Long life ahead.

2003 Cantina di Santadi Carignano del Sulcis Superiore Terre Brune Italy, Sardinia, Carignano del Sulcis
88 points
Deep, dark purple, lots of tartaric acid crystals and some pigmented sediment. On nose, big earthiness, moderate fruitiness, and saltwater taffy. Nose continued to develop with time in the glass. On palate it’s not as expressive, with minerals and earth, with very slight fruitiness; high acidity, high level of slightly astringent tannins. Very young; needs a few more years of bottle age. Interesting.

2004 Agricola Punica Barrua Italy, Sardinia, Isola dei Nuraghi IGT
85 points
Dark ruby, opaque. Course crystals of tartaric acid and fine pigmented sediment. On nose, the fruit fades quickly; just minerality and a streak of green. No fruit on palate, just minerals and a little earthiness. High alcohol, high acidity, rough tannins. Got a replacement glass because of the sediment, but the wine was still all acid and tannins. Short, missing the mid-palate. It’s rough stuff; I can’t imagine that this will improve with bottle age (but it’s possible). Deteriorated with time in the glass.
Red
2004 Duca di Salaparuta Sicilia Triskelè Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
86 points
Ruby, clear. Nose of under-ripe fruit, graphite and minerals, a little tobacco, and some balsamic character. Sharp acidity, moderate level of slightly rough tannins. Short and simple – or it’s just closed for now.
