Introduction

We attempted to get examples from many regions in France. I think we were pretty successful, though Alsace couldn't make it, unfortunately, and we missed Sancerre and Savennieres... Ah well, next time!

Flight 1 (15 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Jean Laurent Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
90 points
almost meaty, the nose was very dense and layered, with some candied strawberry and definitely some chili pepper spice...truly fantastic! The palate was, again, dense and almost full-throttle in flavor. A powerful, intriguing and still delicious wine. Wonderful!
White - Sparkling
N.V. Agrapart Champagne Les 7 Crus Brut France, Champagne
Lemont tart, but finely balanced. Elegant, it kind of got swamped by the burly rose tasted alongside. However, I thought it very nicely done, and I'd definitely buy this again.
White
1985 Daniel Jarry Vouvray Sec France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
flawed
corked.
White
2008 Domaine des Aubuisières Vouvray Cuvée de Silex France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Some chalky metal sensations on the nose, I recognized an underlying bruised peach aroma as well. THe finish was slightly green...I didn't really get a handle on this wine, so I would like to taste it again. But I suspect I gave up after a time because it was simply not that interesting.
White
2008 Confrérie des Vignerons Oisly & Thésée Cheverny France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Cheverny
80% Sauv Blanc, 20% chardonnay.
nose: mineral, juicy melon, sweet red grapefruit. The nose was exceptionally exuberant and very nuanced - just great stuff.
palate: very grapefruity and generous, the finish was quite dry and bracing after the lush attack. Id' like to revisit this wine soem time and I will keep my eyes out for another bottle.
White
2007 Pascal Desroches Reuilly Les Varennes France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Reuilly
84 points
I believe this was the wine tasted, though I did not write down the designation.
Anyway, the nose was increidble to me - smelled just like a pumpkin patch. No one else agreed, but I found it fascinating. The palate did dissapoint, however, being a bit unbalanced with muddied fruit. Rather an 'eh' bottle for me, overall.
White
2006 Domaine de l'Ecu Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Expression de Gneiss France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine
83 points
I found the alcohol a little too obvious on this wine. got some bruised orange aromas, but overall, I it didn't make much of an impression on me. My notes state that this was the first wine of the night to tasted imbalanced.
White
2007 E. Guigal Côtes du Rhône Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
81 points
nose: minerals and dust, this didn't aromatically intrigue or delight. The fruit was kind of 'meh.'
palate: alcohol was supremely strong, I found this way off balance. I'm not a fan of viognier in general (I was told this bottle is 50% viognier), and this wine sure didn't change my perception. Not for me.
White
2006 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis 1er Cru La Forest France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
91 points
oooh la la. pineapple and honey on the nose, with really fun mineral-butterscotch notes on the palate. Lovely mouthfeel, expressive finish. Give me more!
White
2007 Domaine Michel Juillot Mercurey Les Vignes de Maillonge France, Burgundy, Côte Chalonnaise, Mercurey
88 points
nose: sweet woodshop, with a bit of must. I really liked this nose, but others did not necessarily. The wood was much more obiouvs on the nose than on the palate.
palate: lemon caramel, lemon rind. NIce body weight, rather short finish. I found this to be very pleasant, though not spectacular, ad very food friendly, esp with vegetarian fare. 88-89

White
2004 Yves Boyer-Martenot Meursault Les Tillets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
nose: very vegetal, with asparagus, green bean, green pepper and all manner of plantforms. A lovely contrast to the Mercurey (though not exactly intentional).
palate: sweet lemon, much less green than I expected from the nose, but an edge of vegetation was present. Minerals played well with the green and lemon flavors, and I think this was possibly the best food wine of the flight. But in comparison to other wines, it was a bit too green for me.
White
2002 Marc Colin et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs-Gain France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
By far, my WOTN.
the nose was captivating, with sweet sourcream or something like that...at one time I said ricotta and at another i thought cottage cheese, but I twas actually reminded of the oozy blintzes my mother makes, topped with honey or maple syrup. The nose was simply to die for. The palate was ripe, but not too ripe, and very generous with its fruit. At the same time, it maintained an elegant distance, with mineral and dry citrus tones. Yum, yum, yum. I hogged the last of the bottle at the end of the tasting and I'd do it again!
White
2005 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
nose: slightly vegetal, with a little graphite. and...my notes end. I enjoyed this, but next to the 02 Marc Colin et fils Les Champs-gains, my attention was elsewhere...I recall thinking I would have enjoyed this more on its own, had not been over-matched so completely by the competition.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
I have a heck of a time rating dessert wines, especially those that come after 15 wines at the end of a 'meal.' Heavy and viscous, it was most definitely delicious, but in comparison to the lighter Cote du Layon Baeulieu, I felt it a bit cumbersome. Probably me, not the wine. No score.
Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
nose: bright red fruits, plummy graphite.
palate: unfortunately, my palate was pretty shot by this time, but I recall a delicate balance, with subtle nuances of earth, steel and leather. There was talk that this bottle (opened 24 hours prior) had been slightly tainted with TCA. I did not detect any, but it may have muted the flavors. ANyway, thanks Chuck!

Closing

Roy brought several dessert wines, but by then I had put down my pen for good and simply enjoyed the company. One was a Cote du Layon Soucherie, the other I can't recall, and then there was Vin Santo donated by Chuck.

It was a great night!
