Introduction
Backyard gathering to meet James and Michael in Beacon Hill.
Flight 1 (9 notes)
White
2007 Domaine Michel Juillot Mercurey Blanc
I found this round and pleasant in the mouth (though to some, it was too oaky). Hints of dirt around the edges. Simple, but appealing. I think I paid too much for it ($29). If I saw it for about $20, I'd scoop up lots more.

the flower stem and herb garden aromas were really interesting to me, complemented by a rich, dense body of black and blue fruit. I didn't have a lot of time to think about this wine, but I sure enjoyed drinking it.

notes from what was left in the decanter for 24 hours.
nose: graphite, wet slate, black fruit. Elegant, understated.
palate: yep, still tight. If possible this feels tighter than it did last night. Excellent balance, however, and the tannins are not off-putting. Huge capacity for aging - still tastes like a very young wine after 24 hours of air exposure. I very much enjoyed this wine, both with 30 min decant and now with 24 hr decant. But it probably has a lot more to offer down the road. HOLD.

2005 Château Vaissière Minervois
placeholder - I did not taste this. But Amber said it was 'serviceable, but undistinctive'
Rosé
2008 Triennes Rosé

nose: watermelon. And maybe some starfruit, or something rather vaguely sweet and mushy.
palate: Not bad! light on the palate, this is dominated by strawberry (where'd the watermelon go?). It is a bit watery and fine, but super easy to quaff and gives the impression of being a touch sweet. I don't find many roses that I enjoy enough to purchase, but this is one.

tasted 24 hours after opening (corked and in the fridge)
First of all, let me just say that i love the label. The font may be hard to read, but it's beautiful.
Lemony oyster shells, with lime rind on the edges. Fuller at the attack, it fades on the midpalate and finish a touch too quickly. It's mouth puckering, and all that - in the end, a very good muscadet. Great pick.

notes from 24 hours in bottle, corked and left on counter.
nose: exuberant chocolate and blackberry, I fear this might be a bit of a beast. It's got that whack-you-over-the-head kind of aroma going on. Lots of chocolate, vanilla, and dessert-like tendencies.
palate: yep, a dessert beast! This was served slightly chilled, and the alcohol was contained. Gobs of chocolate everywhere on top of rich blackberry syrup. Tannins hold it somewhat together, along with textbook WA acidity. I'm not sure I could drink more than a glass, and at warmer temps, the alcohol is too forward for my liking (14.3% on the bottle). A worthy effort - I can see many people liking this. But I would only order a bottle if I was sharing.

I finally got a taste of this, having opened my bottle a month ago to find it corked. I really enjoyed the depth and complexity of the wine, and the green-gold color was a trip. With air, some petrol aromas came out (which I often find unpalatable, but I could handle it here, since so much else was there to notice like it's mouth-coating intensity, lemon-lime essence, and dirty sea salt characteristics). Very interesting, tasty, and highly recommended. Thanks for sharing, C&J!

Dave brought two of his 2007 Cabernets - one filtered and one unfiltered as well. A great treat to taste the difference!
