Flight 1 - Flight 1 – Pre-tasting wines (2 notes)

Red
2002 Rothvale Vineyard and Winery Shiraz Tilda’s Shiraz Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley
88 points
Ruby red, with a nose of vanilla/toast, black pepper, blueberry and a creamy palate with much of the same. Needs time to integrate.
Red
N.V. Cabin Creek Vineyard & Winery Zinfandel Zinful Rouge USA, Oklahoma
85 points
A wine of two halves. Dark ruby in color with a very 'Oklahoman' nose of funky and confectionery/candied fruit. Not altogether pleasant. However in the mouth there are spicy red fruits, with red currant, tobacco and black pepper. Medium-bodied this is a nicely crafted Zin!

Flight 2 - Flight 2 – Malbec under $16 (4 notes)

Red
2003 Terrazas de Los Andes Malbec Alto Argentina, Mendoza
88 points
An intensely flavored and brilliantly crafted wine that belies its sub $10 price tag. Black fruits and red currant on the nose, with full-bodied and juicy black fruits in the mouth. Even hints of earth in the finish. Outstanding value for money.
Red
2002 Terrazas de Los Andes Malbec Reserva Argentina, Mendoza
91 points
Fig and boysenberry all over the nose with concentrated fruits including blackberry and black raspberry. A depth of fruit in a wine of this price ($14) is almost unheard of, and the power and dexterity, not to say a degree of complexity, makes this is an all-world purchase.
Red
2003 Viña Cornejo Costas Malbec don Rodolfo Argentina, Valles Calchaquíes, Salta, Cafayate
87 points
An interesting Malbec with lots of spicy, red fruits that reveal its cooler climate origins. Herbal and dominated by red fruits in the mouth, this has an attractive herbal underpinning. Well crafted.
Red
2003 Bodegas Escorihuela Gascón Malbec Don Miguel Gascón Argentina, Mendoza
86 points
Not the best showing for this wine but still attractive. A nose of spicy blackberries, with sweet fruits in the mouth, with spicy overtones and hints of mocha. A good finish.

Flight 3 - Flight 3 – ‘Premium’ Malbec – over $16 (3 notes)

Red
2002 Bodega Norton Malbec Reserva Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
89 points
A very serious wine with lots of upside potential. Raspberry and red currant on the nose, with spicy red currant fruits. Retaste in 1-2 years.
Red
2002 Dominio del Plata Malbec BenMarco Argentina, Mendoza, Valle de Uco
90 points
88% Malbec, 12% Bonarda. A nose of plum, spice and cherry, with some charred oak. Broad and mouth-filling, with currant and toasty black fruits. Dark chocolate is found in the finish. Profoundly rich fruit. Complex. Really tasty.
Red
2001 Bodega Catena Zapata Malbec Catena Argentina, Mendoza
This had to be an off bottle as the spicy red fruits on the nose and palate were way too weedy and acidic for a Catena!

Flight 4 - Flight 4 – Malbec / Cabernet Sauvignon Blends (3 notes)

Red
2002 Bodega Norton Privada Mendoza Argentina, Mendoza
90 points
40% Cabernet, 30% Malbec and 30% Merlot. Dark ruby red, with a nose of blackberries and currants. Full-bodied and intense the fruit is fairly sweet with rich plum and blackberry flavors. A nice cuvee that needs 1-2 more years to fully come together. Terrific potential.
Red
2001 Achával-Ferrer Quimera Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo
91 points
54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Malbec, and 22% Merlot. A rich nose of cassis and raspberries, with minerally tinged flavors of blackcurrant and cassis. This was an elegant wine in its early prime
Red
2001 Cheval des Andes Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo, Vistalba
94 points
58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec, and 2% Petit Verdot. A wine that is close to profound. Plum and blackcurrant on the nose that goes on for what seems like forever and an incredible palate of beautifully crafted fruit that just glides over the palate. Seamless, already close to fully integrated, it is hard to imagine this wine getting any better but it could well do that. A great expression of terroir.

Flight 5 - Flight 5 – Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah (3 notes)

Red
2003 Crios de Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon Argentina, Mendoza
85 points
A solid Cabernet with a gamey, currant nose and red currant and blackberry flavors. A little on the fruity and simple side, but pleasant nonetheless.
Red
2001 Bodega Catena Zapata Cabernet Sauvignon Catena Argentina, Mendoza
90 points
Cedar and currant aromas, with black currant and cassis flavors. Not quite as good as the 1999 it is still a fine Cabernet.
Red
2002 Luca Syrah Argentina, Mendoza
92 points
Superb stuff. A spicy nose with licorice, pepper and berry fruits. Very concentrated fruits in the mouth, with peppery black berry and other dark berries.
