White - Sweet/Dessert
2004 Pieropan Recioto di Soave Le Colombare Italy, Veneto, Recioto di Soave

A delicious alternative to Sauterns for a light-medium bodied desert wine. Lots of citrus fruit on the nose and palate, but the dominant nuance for me is a pleasantly surprising mango flavour.

Tasted after dinner in Perth, served to accompany fruit salad and ice cream, which it compemented well.
White
2007 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

White peach flavours on medium body with good length - a very pleasant wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Really lovely wine - very well balanced, with lots going on everywhere - the nose, the palate, and good length. Went back to the last few drops 18 hours later with no loss of flavour. Served on Christmas Day in Perth with Christmas Pud.
Red
2000 Capel Vale Shiraz Kinnaird Whispering Hill Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Mount Barker

Wonderful suprise. Mature, well integrated, lovely balance, and good length. Hard not to like a lot. Relieved that the wine was still good, after pulling a dry, crumbly cork.
Red
2007 Ten Minutes by Tractor Pinot Noir McCutcheon Vineyard Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Mornington Peninsula
91 points
Very well balanced pinot - nose of dark cherry flesh, lots of fruit on the palate, good length.
White
2006 Leeuwin Estate Chardonnay Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Light on its feet yet by no means short of power, creamy with an unusual but very pleasant grapefruit nuance. Long, long finish. Terrific stuff!

Wonderful Christmas Day partner for crayfish starter, bought at the cellar door after tasting there the previous week.
Red
2006 Penfolds Bin 389 Australia, South Australia

Enjoyable. well-made, solid wine. Perhaps lacked a wow factor, but this dark, fruity blend with slightly spicy nose, hints of mulberry and good concentration on the palate didn't disappoint. Went really well with steak.
Red
2004 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
90 points
Very enjoyable wine - very fruity, good length.
White
2007 Cullen Wines Chardonnay Kevin John Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Nice wine, but for me a touch below the other excellent Margaret River chardonnays tasted on this trip (Pierro and esepcially Leeuwin). Golden in colour, quite mouthfilling, OK length, but not especially complex.
Red
2007 Fraser Gallop Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
89 points
Very good value wine. Lots of fruit, well balanced, good length.
Red
2007 Leeuwin Estate Shiraz Art Series Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Pleasantly surprised by this Margaret River shiraz. Not perhaps a blockbuster in the style of most Aussie shiraz that reach UK shores, but actually very enjoyable, medium-weight, and with some life ahead of it, getting better in the brief time it took us to quaff it!
Red
2004 Fraser Gallop Cabernet Sauvignon Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Good value wine. Good fruit, well balanced, ok length. Worth seeking out, though this vintage at least may be perhaps hard to find outside Australia?
Red
2006 Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury, Waipara

Very enjoyable, well balanced, good fruit, ok length. Went well with grilled lamb.
Red
2007 Wither Hills Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough, Wairau Valley

Thoroughly enjoyed on Emirates business class DXB-PER. Enchanting elevated kirsch nose, and pleasant fruit-driven palate. Hope it tastes as good at sea level as it did up there - I snapped up a couple of cases before checking!
Red
1996 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Terrific end to Christmas Day meal. Lots on the enticing classic St Julien nose, woderful concentration on the palate, and lovely 20-30 second length.
White
2007 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon Wallcliffe Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
85 points
Very enjoyable, not unlike a good dry white Bordeaux in style, with pleasant lemon hints most noticeable. Tasted at the cellar door and then served with a Perth picnic where it partnered cold white meats very well.
White
2007 Fraser Gallop Chardonnay Margaret River Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River

Lovely way to end the trip - creamy, buttery, well-balanced classic chardonnay, served with fresh shrimps. It was a privilege to have been able to spend some time earlier on the trip with winemaker Clive Otto, and to be able to observe and admire the attention to detail he demonstrates in every step of the winemaking process. The end product doesn't disappoint!
