Flight 1 (17 notes)

White
2007 Terre del Vulcano Falanghina Lava Beneventano IGT Italy, Campania, Beneventano IGT
Pale green-yellow color. Somewhat grassy with notes of strawberry and pear on the nose. Medium bodied with juicy acidity; sweet. Came across as a lush Sauv. Blanc.. I like this for less than $10.
Red
2004 Seghesio Family Vineyards Omaggio USA, California, North Coast, Napa / Sonoma
Oak bomb central right here. American oak all over the nose, with hints of rose petals and black cherry hiding behind. Medium bodied on the palate, with loads of oak; tannic; hints of funk, tar, and raisins beneath the wash of oak; 15% alc.; this has the structure to ride longer, but I wonder if the oak will ever go away.
White
2006 Di Giovanna Sicilia Italy, Sicily, Sicilia
Crazy nose to this wine – kind of smoky; Armor All – weird, but oddly enjoyable. Oily on the palate; medium bodied; kind of viognier-esque. I liked this.
Red
2007 Produttori del Barbaresco Langhe Nebbiolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Anise, cool raspberry, and a bit of woodsy spice on the nose. Medium-light bodied on the palate; really, a very excellent wine for a mere $20; good acidity/tannin balance; a solid baby-Barolo.
Red
1997 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
Garnet color, with bricking at the edges; sediment present. Super chalky-mint on the nose, along with a good dose of black licorice. Medium-light bodied on the palate, with great acidity; cherry; tannins quite strong at first, but approximately 20 minutes in the glass really helped smooth them out, and made this a wine that drinks very well right now. This was one of my favorites of the day. I would suggest drinking this now, with a healthy decant.
Red
2007 Rocca Dei Venti Morellino di Scansano Italy, Tuscany, Maremma, Morellino di Scansano
85% Morellino, 15% Ciliegiolo

Smoky/ashy on the nose, with a hint of leathery anise too. Medium-light bodied. Cherry on the palate, with a weird, but somehow not off-putting, vegetal aftertaste. Good acidity. This was one of my favorite wines of the tasting.
Red
1999 Castello della Paneretta Quattrocentenario Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
On the nose: woodsy spice with a vegetal component. Medium-light bodied. Tons of asparagus on the palate; slight woodsy spice; smooth; drink now.
Red
2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Kimberly's USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County
lots of bacon fat on the nose; earthy. Medium bodied. On the palate, dark fruits with bacon and licorice; acid and tannins are well-balanced. Clearly defined – a wine with a purpose. my favorite of the Cabots that I tasted today (just a hair ahead of the Aria’s).
Red
2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Humboldt County USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County
Red fruits and underbrush on the nose; medium bodied; raspberry with some smokiness on the palate; none of the bacon that I get on the Kimberly’s and Aria’s. A very solid entry-level Syrah.
Red
2006 Cabot Vineyards Syrah Aria's USA, California, North Coast, Humboldt County
Very similar to the ‘06 Kimberly’s, but I think this is just half a step behind, as it seemed just a tad muddled/wandering, whereas the Kimberly’s is very well-focused. Flavor profile is very similar however: bacon, dark fruits, hints of funk and earth.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Col Vetoraz Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Brut Italy, Veneto, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
Zippy; dry; barely yeasty; refreshing.
White - Off-dry
2003 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
The nose suggests this will be rather sweet; good amount of petrol on the nose, as well. Medium bodied. Honeydew and cantaloupe flavors on the palate, along with some petrol. Tastes kind of watery, despite the incredible warmth of the ‘03 vintage. IMO, a rather poor representation of what JJ Prum can do, especially with this vineyard.
Red
2001 Curto Fontanelle Italy, Sicily, Eloro
Intense florals with hints of blackberries and chalky minerality on the nose. Medium-light bodied. Well-balanced on the palate; flavors of cherry and underbrush; medium length finish; this was one of my favorites of the day.
Red
2007 Agostino Pavia & Figli Barbera d'Asti Bricco Blina Italy, Piedmont, Asti, Barbera d'Asti
Rich scent of violets; slightly ashy. Medium-light bodied. Good acid; cherry & raspberry and the palate; slightly spicy. Straightforward, not complex, kind of boring.
Red
2001 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Both the nose and the palate seemed very tight on this baby. Dark fruits on both the nose and palate. Still needs lots of time.
Red
2004 Celler Marc Ripoll Sans Priorat Closa Batllet Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Florals and raspberry on the nose. Purple color of medium-deep depth. Oaky, with red and purple fruits; a touch of cement-like minerality.
Beer
N.V. Sonoran Brewing Company 200 USA, Arizona
Wow ... this has the distinction of being one of the 10 weirdest beers I’ve ever had ... AND, it’s easily the most alcoholic beer I’ve ever enjoyed, clocking in at about 19.5%!!! On the nose, this smells like a sweet Belgian Tripel, but on the palate it is surprisingly smooth, and it doesn’t taste alcoholic either! Struck me as being somewhat similar to a Tawny Port. Tastes like it would age quite fabulously. I liked this quite a bit, and consider it a real treat that fellow CT’er, fingers, provided the opportunity to try such a unique beer.
