Introduction

My first true experience with Ridge wines. Fantastic.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2007 Ridge Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Color was pale yellow verging on apple juice. Nose was very fragrant green pair with a little minerality and smelled delicious. Palate was medium-bodied but viscous with notes of melon and pair with great acidity. Just an overall great wine.

Dark red color. Bouquet of cherry and cranberry and just smelled delicious. Medium-bodied palate of ripe mix of mostly red fruit but not at all jammy. Smooth tannins turn sticky on the finish. Just great balance and deliciousness.

Dark red color. Perfume-y bouquet that smells of such ripe fruit that it's almost like nail polish with a little rubbing alcohol. Don't let that throw you off though, this smelled delicious. On the palate, good red fruit with savory aspects and chewy tannins. Did not feel at all zin-like, and I guess that makes sense when you consider it's only 58% Zin. I really really wanted to like this more, but it's just too young now. 89 with the potential to go much higher in a few years.
Red
2006 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Estate USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

For me, WOTN at a Ridge wine tasting. Explosive nose of black fruit and a good touch of oak--just smells outright delicious. Ripe red perfume-y fruit on palate with good earth, smooth tannins, and just drinking extraordinarily well right now. Very good QPR and I will have to seek this out.
Red
2005 Ridge Syrah Lytton West Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
Not showing especially well tonight but that may be a function of minimal decanting. Dark purple hue. Floral, tar-like nose with some red fruit. A little more closed than I remember for sure. Not showing well tonight so I won't score it. Should have been decanted to really shine.
Red
1999 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Dark red color with faint bricking at the rim. Old-world nose of green olives and red fruit. Just showing its age beautifully and I could literally smell this for days. Very similar on the palate with the same green olives, surrounded by still-vibrant fruit. Tasted like a meal onto itself. Just a phenomenal first experience with the Monte Bello.
