Huge fan of Mike's Carter Cellars wines but haven't been as successful with his other wines (namely Quivet) so wanted to see where I stand with Myriad. Nose was quite open with currant and a floral (maybe violet) nose. Currant flavor dominated with a bit of smokiness. Lacks the velvety smoothness and additional complexity of the Carter wines but that's not really even a fair comparison given this is a Napa bottling only. Pretty enjoyable overall even if I sound a bit critical but how did we get to the point that even the entry level bottling is $60 and you have to try and convince yourself that's a good deal, which relatively speaking it probably is. Still on the fence about the upcoming 2014's but leaning towards ordering a few. Held up the second day but I wouldn't necessarily say it improved. Became a bit more acidic if anything.

Decanted; no sediment. First pour one hour later. Ruby/garnet color, semi opaque. Quite muted nose of berries, but not much else. Those who rave about this wine must just want to swig it without smelling first. Medium bodied red fruit on the palate, but nothing special about it. The fruit is balanced by good acids and tannins, but the finish is fairly short. Why anyone would pay $60/bottle (The CT average) for this wine is beyond me. At $15, it might make sense. This wine is not going to further improve with age, so drink up over the next 2-3 years.

I forget I have a bunch of Whitehall Lane wines and so often overlook them just because they are sort of under the radar nowadays. However, their insane consistency is something to truly admire. I pulled this out the other night and was completely amazed at how wonderful this was showing. A beautifully balanced wine that a lover of Cali power Cabs would enjoy yet enough finesse to compliment a great steak. Cassis and plum aromas and a little cigar wrapper enticed the palate with what was to come and to me the wine really pulled it off. Great on the attack with wonderful fruit flavors and a nice pop of acidity in the mid palate to keep the palate fresh and the 30 second or so finish just completed the picture. Well done!!

Had the wine with rare, grilled rib eye steak, corn on the cob and spinach salad. I chose this wine because I expected big things (90+) to go along with my birthday steak and was a bit disappointed. The wine was a nice bluish purple, plum color. Nose was nice with mixed notes of chocolate and oak underlying the basic California cab aromas. Taste was sweeter than I expected with lots of fruit but no layers of the fruit flavors. There was a lot of chocolate; the oak was mild and the tannin was soft and smooth. Finish was nice but as we drank more there was little bit of green astringent bite that came out. A good cab, no doubt, but not worth the $50+ that my friend who gave it to me had to pay; I could have bought several different bottles of equally well made and equal or better quality cabs for 1/3 the price.
