My first time with Yquem, so some nerves. Luminous gold as it rested in a little antique decanter. Not much on the nose - some cool deep scents with a little botrytis, but no revelation. But then. A joyful, forceful attack. Ravishing. And pulse after pulse of flavour to the point where I began to laugh - not a reaction I generally have to wine. The sensation echoes for several minutes. Drunk for G's birthday, accompanied by the final act of Rosenkavalier.

10/25/10, 12:42 AM - Thank you for this beautifully written tasting note. Thanks, too, for the recommended combination - Yquem and Rosenkavalier is one I'm definitely going to have to try!

I wonder if there is something wrong with me. I have read a number of recent very flattering reviews of this wine. I opened a bottle assuming it would be ready for business but instead found a bruiser, inchoate dark fruits, brooding tannin and noticeable alcohol. Not a whisper of sandalwood, blackcurrant, mint or cigarbox. I'll leave this one to the experts as to how it will develop. Given its pedigree I suspect well but last night's experience has scared me off for a good few years. I was watching a programme about komodo dragons at the time; the two were equally intimidating. Passable.
