Red
Deep red. High intensity aromas of scorched blackberry, crushed lava rock, brambles, cocoa powder, and subtle hints of vanilla. On the palate it's dry and just under full-bodied with medium acidity and high tannins that hit the front of the mouth. Even though tannins are high, they are fine-grained and chocolatey with a bitterness like darjeeling tea. Finish is long and ends on a lingering gravelly sweet note.

Perfect pairing? Carne Asada and fries.

1989 Château Montrose St. Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
This wine was in good form when opened. Drinking perhaps towards the top of it's bell curve, with only slight hints of volatile acidity in the aroma. Flavors of Tobacco, old leather are predominant but lead into burnt raspberry, anise and prune. Acidity was medium plus. Tannin was medium plus on front and medium grit on roof of my mouth.

Hazy ruby core to garnet rim a bright and intense color with medium viscosity and slight staining of the tears. Exquisite aromas of semi dried black currants, red plums, rocky minerality and tertiary notes of licorice overshadowed with wintergreen. Balance between fruit and herbal aromas, particularly wintergreen, sage and tri-color pepper. On the palate, surprisingly lighter than aroma suggested with acidity, a rare steak meatiness and black cherry fruits... and more wintergreen. Drank on equinox. still wondering if that has anything to do with it. Server butchered the capsule, it was cute (note to self: pretend capsule is not there).

On second thought. This wine is considerably higher on my personal taste scale than the norm. I will mark as such!

Dark slight opaque purple violet to thin magenta rim and medium-plus viscosity. Youthful aromas of black plum, vanilla-cream and chocolate with dried dragonfruit and five spice powder. Slight wet pottery clay aromas. dusty. Lush palate of blueberry and lingonberry with dark cocoa dust. Smooth tannins and light playful acids on tip of the tongue. Relatively simple and supple finish, an outstanding value at around $20.

Dark opaque ruby to pale ruby garnet rim, slight haze and medium-plus viscosity. Aromas of Cooked plums, stewed blackberry, vanilla, baked beans and cumin spice. An initial zing of fresh acidity leads into plum-blueberry pie, granite and baked mexican spices. Strong but balanced oak tannins and lighter acidity make this wine a bold brother to many Washington counterparts. Winemaker indicates 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot.
