color doesn’t look anywhere it’s age, just the slightest bricking. That familiar aged Ravenswood leather and wood on the nose. Still high acid, and deeper red fruit than the normal cassis note. Leather continues on the finish. Another great aged example.

Maybe i'm not a Bordeaux drinker, but when my contact called and said that there are 13 cases per store, just arrived, of a new Diamond from France, I went down and bought 3 bottles anticipating something special. I was surprised by a sour dry repulsive taste. I forced myself to drink the one bottle I opened and took the other 2 back. What did I do wrong?
  • JaynPam commented:

4/8/23, 4:53 PM - What wine you enjoy is a matter of taste. But given that you describe the bottle as "sour", it may have been a flawed bottle. In that case, what you did wrong was not to pop a cork in the disliked bottle and return it to TJ's. I don't believe that a bottle that is not flawed but not to your taste should be returned . But, Anytime you think a bottle may be flawed, it should be returned to the seller (unless you think it may be because of how you stored the wine). Your second mistake in my opinion is to force yourself to drink it. Wine is meant to be enjoyed...you should never need to force yourself to finish it. Life is too short to drink bad wine (said someone, I don't know who). Na Zdrowie!

Premiere Napa Valley; 2/22/2023-3/25/2023 (Napa, California): Tasting Library vintages at PNV 2023. Very brief tasting notes around.

Dark fruit, big broad and muscular with chewy tannins, struggled with this wine more than I hoped for.
  • JaynPam commented:

2/26/23, 10:15 AM - Do you think this wine would benefit from more age or will it start going downhill?

Relatively small tasting pour, this is a blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and Grenache Blanc (and maybe others). Light, pale lemon yellow color in the glass. Clean, floral nose (from the Viognier?). Slightly oily, dense texture as one would expect from this blend. Fairly bright in acidity (from the Granache Blanc?). Somewhat tannic for a white (from the Marsanne and Roussanne?) very much akin to good Rhone whites. Palate is quite minerally, somewhat austere with bits of citrus, white peach and a melange of tropical fruit notes. No noticeable wood influence. I tend to like blends like this but it isn't what most people would consider a "crowd pleaser" but a good food wine, able to pair with hearty dishes and spice. I think of this as somewhat "contemplative".
  • JaynPam commented:

    9/1/22, 6:28 PM - Contemplative...what my husband and I call "two sippers".

Didn't know quite what to make of this. Sour but well-made and balanced. Did I like it? It became less strange as I drank a glass. Have to try it again. Nowhere near as convincing as the Peche Lambic, in any case--but that's a different kettle of fish...

cork perfect.
This was amazing last night. I am not into big and brawny anymore, but somehow this manages to hide the alcohol and the acid keeps the dense fruit from being flabby. holding zin for 22 yrs was a bit of Russian river roulette (pun intended), but properly stored this still has life ahead. the fireworks might have been canceled but they happened in my backyard with this bottle. special

Bought 1b from Grocery Outlet for 3.20 during recent 20% off sale. Drunk over 2 days. Day 1: dark ruby color, red fruit nose and body with some oak; enjoyable, simple. Appears to be Paso field blend, composition unknown. Day 2: some micro-ox added some subtlety, better mouthfeel. Screwcap. My evaluation: I've stopped giving scores on a "100-point scale" as I've become less convinced that they can be meaningful to others. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. I considered this notable- when considering quality, age, and price.
  • JaynPam commented:

12/17/18, 7:51 PM - May I adopt your rating system? LOL. I find it helpful and descriptive. The 100 point score could be helpful if people tried to follow the guidelines, but many do not. Thanks for this note, open a bottle now (from GO as well)

Oregon Tasting with special guest Jade Helm (Common Lot Restaurant - Millburn, NJ): Mid way though the reds, was skeptical that this varietal would hold any interest coming from Oregon.

Surprised to the upside, true to the varietal. Nose of ripe red fruits, sweetness on the nose. Plate of red fruits, raspberry liqueur, licorice, savory. Rich texture and mouthfeel. Medium finish. Downside is at $100 not sure its worth the frieght
  • JaynPam commented:

10/15/16, 8:20 PM - But it is worth a trip to Souther OR! Seriously, Abacela is located outside of Roseburg, not in the Willamette Valley. So climate is totally different. We live in Portland and have been fans of Abacela since they opened. They have a nice touch with Spanish varietals. So we don't pay freight. If you find yourself in Oregon, let us know. We would love to show you our favorite wineries.

What a beautiful bottle of aged zin. Geyserville rarely disappoints and this bottle was no exception. Very elegant wine that was a perfect match for tenderloin. Wish I had more than one bottle remaining. Allow this about an hour to open up.

North Willamette Vintner's Wine Trail Weekend; 4/9/2011-4/10/2011: Strange rubber ball scents. Plastic as well. Mild tight fruit. Nice fruit on the palate, with pleasing earthiness and good green fruit shavings. Tart and tight on the finish though, and again, not showing much at all.

A friend of mine brought a 2005 Rioja to dinner, so I brought this from 2005 as a comparable--and it really was quite a difference! While the Rioja was ruby red, expressive and supple, this is black as midnight, tannic and brooding. And pretty great. It took almost 90 minutes of decanting for the tannins to calm down, but once the balance emerged, the wine's darkness (it's the only word I can think of) took over. It's a deep, strong wine--definitely not old world style and not for those looking for an American Rioja. Black cherries, a touch of earthiness, a little peppery. Clearly not 100% Tempranillo--maybe merlot and probably syrah in the blend? I will try to find more. This could have been cellared for another few years, easy.
  • JaynPam commented:

5/25/15, 12:34 PM - Thanks for the review, I have a bottle sitting in my cellar. About the only place that I know you can purchase this wine is at the winery and I don't think they have any more. It was a small production. And as far as I know and the Abacela website states, it is 100% Tempranillo.
Again thanks for the review, sounds like I can keep my bottle for a few more years. Always nice to know where things are.

The sweetest quality red wine I've tasted. Still trying to form an opinion. The nose is very pretty. The palate is suave, tobaccoy, with other earthy scents, like figs and smoke. The concentration is good. It's sweeter than many old vine zinfandel wines. I'll give it 90 points for now. Not sure about the sweetness. Not too familiar with Priorat.
  • JaynPam commented:

1/3/12, 8:41 PM - Sweet??? Really? Or are you confusing fruitiness with sweetness? I just purchased a bottle, and haven't tasted it. However, Priorat is typically not a sweet wine. Nor is Old Vine Zin. You've got me curious about this wine now. Can't drink it tonight since it has not yet reached cellar temp. Regardless, with a score of 90, I expect it to be be pretty good.
