I assume this was flawed - bought from WB and had an overwhelming olive taste. Hoping it will get better - will report if it does.

Interesting nose, truly unlike anything I've had before - super floral, almost candied flowers - girlfriend says it smells like those violette pastilles that come in a can. It's attractive and fresh and again, interesting, if not terribly complex - kind of one-note. It's balanced and tasty and lithe on the palate, and this is perfectly good wine. But there is nothing whatsoever that speaks of Provence here - that aspect of the wine is completely absent. I love the rose, this is not something I would buy again.

    4/5/22, 6:40 PM - My error; it was the 2019 I'd read.

2017 base; disgorged 25/06/2020. Very interesting and young. Served from the fridge and it opened up with time and as it warmed in the glass. Surprising amount of crisp citrus, lemon peel, wet limestone. This is much different than anything I have had, and there is enough salinity to make me think these can age for a little while.

Also, although it doesn't matter for the wine, it's worth noting the labels are fantastic and very consumer friendly. Love the larmat maps and detailed info about the wine, base year, etc.

2011 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Syrah

Viewed as the $40 wine that it was on release: a solid and indeed typical Saint-Joseph displaying the traditional side of Northern Rhône Syrahs. Nice fruit that isn't over ripe, some leather and olive, no overt oak, but I don't find it the most interesting vintage of this particular wine that I've had. I'm inclined to put that down to the vintage, not the Gonons. At the current going rate, which seems to have approached Cornas-like levels, this wine is not there in terms of depth or complexity.

12/11/20, 10:32 AM - I'm no Spanish wine expert but am inclined to agree that Mencia from the best sources offers compelling quality for the current prices. I think KLWM imports Gonon wines now and that might explain much of the price increase.

Alcoholic and over oaked to death. Fruit seems to be fine, bit the wine is really disjointed.

9/27/18, 5:56 PM - This wine sees no oak.

2012 Pierre Gonon Ardèche Les Iles Feray Syrah
Took this to a BYO place in Brooklyn. Offered the server a glass after it had been open maybe 45 minutes. She thanked us and walked away. Before she got wherever she was going she turned back and came to us to ask "did you put olives in this?" No, I said. "I love olives," she said, "and it tastes like there are olives in here.

A nice wine overly influenced by the zillions of Paolo Bea worshipers, this red blend has a touch of medicinal alcoholic heat/menthol on the nose, juicy tannins, savory and dark fruits on the palate. It also has the "Rosenthal Kiss" (an extra $7-13 a bottle, thanks Neil...) so its the complete package - huge ego wine maker coupled with huge ego wine importer.

What more could you ask for (how about a little more VQP??). At $30 a bottle this wine compares well with lots of other Italian reds at $20 (hmmm). I guess compared with Paolo's more expensive stuff this is a "bargain".

Ok Ok its not bad. Its really pretty fine. But its not a 91 or a 92 or a 93....Drink more Italian wines folks and see for yourself.....

8/9/13, 7:37 AM - The 2008 costs up to $40, so I guess that "kiss" is bigger now. He does impose a hefty premium....

This wine is unbelievably tart. I've had more complex Odwalla juices. This tasted like a cross between grapefruit and pomegranate juice. The trouble is, it's a $50 poorly made juice which is just infuriating. I wouldn't wish this wine on my worst enemy. It's just too cruel. I suppose if there were any silver lining, it's good to occasionally taste bad wines like this which make me truly appreciate the stellar efforts of talented winemakers.

12/28/12, 10:59 AM - I can tell from your other notes that the Arnot / Roberts wines are not likely to appeal to you, and clearly this one didn't. They are aiming (successfully, in my view) for something very different from from the riper, more extracted style of fruitiness that is more common and, no doubt, more popular among many California wine makers and drinkers. But to call this particular wine 'poorly made' or 'bad' is off the mark. These terms are absolutes when all you are really expressing is your subjective preference.
