Tasted over two days.

Cabernet family markers standout here, particularly for comprising only 10 percent of the assemblage, as if enveloping a compact Merlot core. Otherwise, true to place, with Pomerol terroir on full display.

Tight upon opening and throughout both days. Had hoped that more bracing character would come forward with air, or on the second day, but it did not.

Overall, certainly high quality, and although technically excellent, generally underwhelming. The wine just sort of left me hanging. When $20 - $30 Bordeaux can deliver 91-92 point scores, what good is an $80 - $100 Bordeaux that achieves no more?

There may be room for improvement, but I would not count on it.

We continue to enjoy this wine.

I noticed you have scored this wine a many times recently. You might want to consider that the normal protocol is to publicly score wines maybe once a year as wines may change - that way the score gets collected from a wider spectrum of points of view - and repetitive notes/scores get filtered out.

Otherwise one reviewer can greatly skew the score by repeated public scores/reviews while not adding much to the discussion of the wine characteristics. Another option some use is to review multiple times but not publicly post a score each time

    Just a thought;)

Spirits
N.V. Marie Duffau Bas Armagnac Hors d'Age 12 Years Old White Blend
Despite the glowing reviews and touted 92 pt neck label, I found this flabby, almost soapy, in texture and not nearly as refined as the better VSOP Cognac I have enjoyed. I keep hearing that Armagnac is a better drink than Cognac, but if this is one of the better examples of Armagnac, then guess I am just going to stay in the Cognac camp!
  • brucerob commented:

12/9/21, 9:40 PM - This is Armagnac for the uneducated. Please do not judge based on $45 bottle

Not a big fan of this Pinot. Taste was a little off for me.

11/6/21, 8:18 AM - Right, probably too young - needs about 5 years from vintage date

What a beauty of a wine! Nuanced and rich flavors, dense but not overboarding. It was a surprise find during a wine tasting trip to Santa Barbara and surrounding vineyards, and I keep loving it every time I open a bottle. Was better with some decant.

2019-11-30: 90 Points
This time around, it did not feel particularly special. Good wine, yes, but didn‘t cause us to cheer like last time. I have no idea what explain the difference. Was it the bottle? The mood? The food?

2020-01-30: 94 points. Excellent again, this time.

Grand total: 93 points.

Very delicious with lots of depth in its flavors of strawberry and dark cherry. Wonderful purity and cleanness. Nice aftertaste also. Reminds me of our first Gap's Crown from 2007 that got our attention.

Needs time. A little syrupy. Not melvilles best. Disjointed
  • brucerob commented:

7/16/20, 8:05 PM - 50 points? That's a score for a completely undrinkable flawed wine, not a wine that was drank too young or not your style - just my opinion

Wonderful aromas of black cherry and currants with lively black cherry, spice, and cedar notes on the velvety palate and long finish. Classic Sea Smoke! Last of the 2007 Ten's.
  • brucerob commented:

8/13/19, 4:01 AM - Glad you like this wine, however posting 3 different 96+ ratings in a short period of time can skew the actual rating of a wine... most people only score publicly once in a short period of time or post without giving a score after the first

  • brucerob commented:

8/13/19, 6:53 PM - I think a year apart is a good rule of thumb but you are entitled to your opinion. Keep drinking the good stuff!

Really rockin right now. So expressive of Gaps with dark cherry, raspberry, chocolate and a bit of moss. Beat the pants off the bottle of 2013 we drank side by side. I hope it will only get better with some more time but it’s certainly going to be hard to keep these in the cellar.
  • brucerob commented:

3/20/19, 5:50 PM - Interesting you say that. I’ve recently drank my 2013 sojourns and was very disappointed. I’ve been on the list since 2009 and it was the first bad vintage. Apparently those wines did not age well

I was disappointed in this bottle in light of the Pro Ratings and the price point. I see another reviewer had an experience in line with what it should have been. Perhaps my bottles have not yet settled down from shipping. The wine was tight and one-dimensional.
  • brucerob commented:

1/11/19, 6:24 PM - It might be you were disappointed because these wines deserve 4 or 5 year in the cellar - I started drinking my 2013 Sojourns in 2018.

For those who favor big powerful cabs it doesn't get much better than this. The wine was flawless in every category and I don't think others would question why I gave it such a high rating. It was tight upon opening so I double decanted about six hours before consuming with a steak dinner.
  • brucerob commented:

10/25/18, 7:40 PM - Wow - that score should only be given a few times in one's life IMO

The floral notes are strong here. They remain with you alongside the sweet ripe, cherries, licorice and cocoa. The wine is silky, medium/full bodied, and finishes with sweet, ripe, fresh, juicy plums and licorice. This is a very good wine, and gives the equally strong 2016 a run for the money However, things should get even better here, as the winery was recently sold to Peter Kwok, who already owns numerous, Right Bank vineyards. Stay tuned!
  • brucerob commented:

4/25/18, 7:41 PM - Hi Jeff, I glad you like this wine however it may not be necessary to re-score it 93 points every time you drink it since it skews the average score upward beyond the average opinion from other tasters. After the first one, maybe post notes without an official score and mention in the review your opinion of the score like the post on 5/4/2016 did?

drank a glass or two from the bottle with my coravin. superb. great mouth feel from start to finish. excellent fruit presentation.
NOTE on the coravin:
i am not sure how long wine lasts when taken with the coravin.
i will try this bottle again in a day, a week and then 2 weeks.
some other wines I've tried with the coravin did not last meaning in 3 or 4 weeks after i drank from them when i tried them again they were very different (done! the argon did not do it's job!)
my guess is that it might have been that the bottles were placed on their side so increased the surface area of the wine to be covered by the argon gas? not sure but be interested in others experience with the coravin.
  • brucerob commented:

4/8/15, 6:18 AM - You said you would post a follow-up. Are you still using your Coravin?

  • brucerob commented:

4/11/15, 8:12 AM - Thanks for the update. I have had good luck with Coravin so far. Unfortunately I do not have room in my home cellar for stand up bottles

Did you ever drink the rest of the 1997 Lokoya?

Nine months later, and I have to say I am shocked only 19 bottles have been consumed and no one has left a tasting note other than me. I think these will age, but at 5 years I consider this to be a great time to pop the cork.

Cassis, tobacco, plum fruit. Medium finish and fine tannins.

Lots of big, bright, red fruit. Some spice, soft tannins, and acidity on the back end. A really nice value for the price.
