First Bedrock and I'm pleased with what I'm tasting. None of the molasses and tobacco that I associate with CA Zins, just pure, sweet berry aromas and flavors. This wine will be a crowd pleaser for the holiday season.

Opened for 3 hours, decanted for 1 hours prior to pouring. Lots of heat that calmed down in the glass. Fruit was muted, oak was not; probably suffering from some bottle shock. I'll come back in 6 months.

Decanted for 30 minutes initially, consumed over the course of 6 hours. A dark ruby color, this wine didn't give much on the nose at first, but nutmeg and vanilla came through after about an hour of decanting. Pleasing mocha and blackberry flavors are present from the start, but the notable characteristic here is the tannic structure, which is both firm and balanced. No other wine - including Pax, Alban, and Copain - has stained my teeth like this young, sinewy beast. Clearly, this is a wine that needs some time to come together, but it seems like a winner to me.

Drank this with dinner (spicy Asian chicken salad) and loved it. I was a little concerned that it would be overwhelmed by the food, but the wine was brilliant. My wife's first comment was "Wow - this is smooth!", which was right on target. The L'Avion is very approachable, with long-lasting flavors of pear and butterscotch. I purchased a case from the winery after this dinner.

Dinner at Sona in West Hollywood, CA - 9-30-06. Bottle was decanted for 30-40 minutes after our arrival. Paired with roasted lamb and beef tenderloin. Deep blackberry nose. mouthfeel wasn't the 10W-40 I had been expecting, but was quite burly. Luxurious tannins, mild heat, long, smoky finish. 95 points.
