Note from day two, day one was PnP on the beach! Bought locally as we picked up BBQ tacos, and headed back out to the beach...my first impression was...why the hell don't I buy these when the mailer comes out?? I've been buying RM Chards and Pinots from day one...and seem to bypass the Cabs when they are offered? I guess Calif Cab is still on the back side of the brain right now...still have and love 04-05 Outpost Cabs...but MAN am I missing out! This "basic" Napa CS is CRAZY rich with inky and extracted blackberry/blueberry fruits...not at all over the top sweetness...KILLER graphite dryness, which is a must have for me...plush yet firm dry tannins...dark chocolate brownie oooooze...liqueured bing cherry cordials...dusty white pepper, clove spiced...black licorice, deep compost earth...such BIG-uns...but shows them off with such class and naturality. Killer wine! Will make me rethink next cab mailer.

Opened this for a grilled chicken dinner based on many recent positive reviews. Aubert never disappoints. These Chards are simply the best. So thick on the palate. Almost like a syrup. Apricot, lemon zest, white peach. Keeps evolving with each sip. Decanted for an hour and was good to go. Hard to put the glass down. It’s really the only Chard I get excited to open and experience..
  • WojoWineCave commented:

8/25/21, 1:47 PM - Heck ya! These wines are just so good. And we’re not big chard drinkers!

  • WojoWineCave commented:

8/26/21, 4:55 AM - We’ve been backing off those as well and searching harder for better QPRs. We’ve had some success in finding some better priced cabs from Thomas Rivers Brown such as Swagger, Caterwaul, Rivers-Marie, Double-Diamond.

Decanted for a couple of hours. Was less tannic then previous reviews and prior bottles I have had. It was good, not great. Not a wow wine and for the money there are better options out there especially in 2016. Certainly more red fruit and more BDX oriented as others have commented on.
  • WojoWineCave commented:

8/15/21, 11:21 AM - Just seems more Bordeaux like. Thinner and far less Napa cab fruit forward. More red fruit based.

Ok. So last time I tried this it was phenomenal and rated 98. Tonight it was perfect. From a PnP on through to the end it evolves and left me and my wife speechless.
  • WojoWineCave commented:

1/24/20, 1:26 PM - Definitely. Let me know what you think. I’ll probably pop a 2012 Bevan tonight. The 12’s seem to be perfect right now to me, but tend to like more fruit forward Cali cans compared to say an aged French Bordeaux so depends on your preference.

Ok. Wow compared to my last note and bottle 3 years ago. what a difference. Very much back to the style we know and love. One hour decant and just perfect alongside a medium rare steak.

  • WojoWineCave commented:

12/11/19, 10:17 AM - Yes. This bottle is stags so it was more akin to Wildfoote, which is also one of my favorite Bevans. This one also tended to remind me of a 2012 Dominus and 2014 Schrader CCS.

Wake Surfing & Wine with Mr and Mrs BobbyG; 7/16/2016-7/17/2017 (Lake Oconee, GA): Very well integrated at 7 years young. It's not over the top Napa Cab. It's somewhere between a Napa cap and French Bordeaux. Red fruit, more earth or minerals. Elegant with cheeses. 2nd WOTN.
  • WojoWineCave commented:

1/20/19, 6:47 AM - The 2010 vintage is 26% merlot. It’s still primarily cab at 61%. The newer vintages are indeed more merlot blends. The 2015 for example is 61% merlot.

Bevan, SQN, and others - SF (Sean Rowe live solo house performance) (San Francisco): Phenomenal performance for such a young wine. Hands down the best EE I've ever had. So concentrated, opulent, and deep, but at the same time brimming with energetic purple and red core fruit. Additional notes of blackberry, red and black raspberry liqueur, vanilla, cassis, licorice, and some baking spices. I couldn't tell if I was getting hints of a floral component, or if the alcohol-laced vanilla notes on the back end were playing tricks on my palate. Whatever it was, it was an amazing array of flavors.

Only a hair away from potentially becoming a total orchestra of perfection, the EE was probably my WOTN (maybe tied with the 2015 PerUs Cabernet tasted alongside the EE). Hold the EE for another year or two to see if it can hit that 100 point mark. 98-99+ points at the moment.

7/8/17, 11:46 AM - Thanks great hear regarding the 15s. I have not tried them yet,but ordered a bunch from Bevan. I was bummed I couldn't get the Harbison vineyard. Those are usually my favorite but was told by Sharon the yield was low and only wound up with a few cases.

  • WojoWineCave commented:

8/23/17, 4:31 PM - I tried the Moonracer. It was very good, but I'd still rather pop a Bevan. I like the Realm wines but they seem a notch below in general. But that's my palate. Pick up a few Bevans and you will be very happy, especially if you noted you like Carter and Myriad. I too enjoy all Mike Smith wines, but again put Russell a notch ahead. Also agree on the Addax omment above. Love that wine along with PerUs. Buy up and never look back.

Had this alongside a Carter Weitz 2013 and the Carter was a Wow wine so this didn’t hold up. This has a lot of structure, tannin and minerals. the Carter just seemed silky smooth, rounded edges and a wonderful nose and finish. Had both while enjoying a grilled Filet.

Opened in bottle for 2 hours and decanted an additional 3. Still incredibly young but ultra expressive even at this stage. Incredible complexity with compacted layers of extracted blue/black fruit, cassis liqueur, menthol, milk chocolate, cherry syrup...peaking through. An amazing amount of freshness counterbalances this with wild raspberry, strawberry juice, tobacco, crushed granite, and lead. The final result is nearly flawless with clean/precise fruit shinning through. The finish lingers strong for at least a minute. This will only improve over the next 5 years.

Livermore AVA + Wente Dinner with a ton of other wines: Surprisingly a bit past its prime for my preference (depending on how your palate is drawn to the different transitioning phases of this varietal). Notes of red currant, sandalwood, earth, bark, cedar, and hints of mushroom and redwood. Light-to-medium bodied, with a bit of a flat delivery of flavors overall. Mid-palate was lacking some concentration, especially in terms of the wine’s ability to push the flavors on through the initial attack and into the back end. Not a lot of drive on this wine.

Delicate, feminine, and elegant (perhaps) are all the quasi-positive words that come to mind here. Fragile, weak, and thin are some of the “other” words that also come to mind. To be fair, this wine displayed a nice balance and was very accessible. Michelin star restaurants like this wine because it won’t jack up the nuanced fare they are trying to impress you with; so we can call it good in that regard. For me, it just didn’t have much personality or hold any actual flavor interest. It was more like a timid BDX rather than an expression of the domestic terroir from which its lineage is derived.

86-89 points depending on where you stand with the IPOB crowd.

1/18/18, 3:55 PM - Spot on. I am finding some of these older Monte bello’s to be this way. I keep thinking two things. 1). My own palate has changed to enjoy the bigger, fuller new style cabs from Bevan, Mike Smith, TRB, or 2). These are not aging like many assumed.

This wine has certainly lived up to my expectations! Dark black and blue with purple and fruits that match the color profile, including Black and Blueberry, and plum with a spice I can't put my finger (or nose) on. Earth and mineral notes mid-palate and a finish that goes on and on. This is a pure example of Cabernet at its best. Interestingly, with a short decant, it was open for business. Throughout my tasting, this was such a pleasure to drink.

Chris Tynan's signature masterpiece Cabernet from The Meleagris Gallopavo Vineyard has its own style, its own profile and its own taste and it is amazing. This is very different from other wines that I like, and this has it all. Too bad there is none left to purchase!

1/2/18, 5:13 PM - Thanks for the post. Really helpful. I have 2 bottles but will hold for now. After reading RP’s review which blew my mind the way he described his experience drinking this wine, I have been very tempted. I have the 12 as well and have tried one. I liked it and also found it to be very unique for Cali Cab but wasn’t blown away by it. I am hoping the 13 is different. Your review is extremely encouraging.

Tasted through a fantastic lineup of Vice Versa wines with my good friend Chris, and The Bretons on their patio with magnificent views of the valley floor on one side and The Mayacamas Mountains on the other side. Very fortunate to be offered barrel samples of the '16 Las Piedras, '16 Crane and '16 To-Kalon. Additionally, tasted the '15 Napa Cab, a '14 To-Kalon, and a side-by-side tasting of their '14 Las Piedras versus (no pun intended) '14 Las Piedras BBS. Finished it off with the '08 Michel Gonet Champagne. The '15s were just bottled, they were going through bottle shock and therefore, were unavailable to taste. I'm guessing that the '15 NV was bottled earlier.

The LPV BBS is a step above their "regular" bottling (if you want to call something so amazing - regular). Dark purple to the rim and dripping with spectacular black and blue fruit, deeply concentrated but not over the top. The LPV BBS was also open for business! Typical Las Piedras notes of rock, scorched earth with graphite and chocolate on the finish. A finish that goes on and on and you hope it never stops. Well integrated tannins and it just has that something special wine lovers enjoy so much when you can find it.

I will rate the other bottles later, but keep your eyes out for the '16 LPV. That was amazing and I'm sure that it will merit a 100 point score when it is eventually reviewed.

OMFG! First time I've drank Schrader, or anything in its class, and it is quite extraordinary! On the nose, intoxicating aromas of vanilla, blueberry and wisps of raspberry. On the palate, explosively more! Decanted 2 hours, then poured it back in the bottle uncorked for another 5 hrs, which worked fine. When I decanted it, the wine seemed to cling to the sides of the decanter fighting gravity's downward pull. Similarly, when in my mouth, it completely smothered it with beautiful, luscious, flavors. I see where other TNs note the layers of flavors as that description is apt! It's ready to go now and will most likely improve for 5 years. The CT end date is 2030, which I struggle to understand as it is so spectacular now and I don't think it's made for the long haul! Of the 1,045 wines I've logged in CT as Consumed, this IS THE BEST! It's the Anna Nicole Smith of cabs (when she was on her game)!

Similar notes one year later. Bumped it 1 point. This is special. This tasting note is for all you golfers. Was out out Burning Tree and Congressional last week with upcoming rounds at Erin Hills and Baltusrol. Certainly not bragging. Rather feeling lucky and fortunate. As such thought it was appropriate to pop something special and reflect on that. This wine will make you sit back and forget about the negativity or issues in this world. Similar to when playing golf on a quiet special golf course. These types of escapes are so special and this when delivers. Still way too young to drink and would like to convince myself to hold the 100 RP pointer for another decade+ to truly taste heaven. Though for now carpe diem.

Wow, just got my allocation and had to try it. Way early, but also ready to go surprisingly. It has wonderful mouthfeel, big nose of fruit and sort of a cotton candy finish but not in a syrupy way or fruit bomb manner. Tannins and oak present but not overbearing. Great wine. Not cheap but would be compelled to buy more.

I'm giving you the PnP rundown here. If it changes a ton over the course of the next 24hrs, I will add to this note. Let me start by saying that I think every time I have an Outpost Cab, I wonder why I didn't purchase more. For $85, you are getting a terrific value with this wine in Napa terms (not sane terms mind you).

Back to the wine. Very dark in the glass, with notes of charcoal, blueberries and scorched earth. Very intense and complex. First sip and you get very firm but sweet tannin, showing this is much more accessible early than the 13 vintage. That said, it is still a mountain wine and could use 5-7 years if you can wait. It has a great mix of deep mineral driven flavors with blue/black fruit and laser focus on the pallet. The structure and complexity stand out, and for those that dislike valley floor fruit bombs, this is the answer.

As Parker mentions in his review, the oak is so well integrated you don't taste much if any. The finish is a good 30-45 secs. This is really terrific and will get much better. Without a doubt, I think the '14 is better than the '12 version, and certainly rivals the '13. Great stuff.

Day 2: Just as a follow up, about 24hrs later and it's softened up a little bit, but there's still a ton of structure and tannin. Not falling apart at all. A bit easier going down, but PnP was good as well since I don't mind the firmness.
