2020 Château Haut-Bages Libéral Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot
42-45hl/ha (close to river)
80% oak (40% new, 40% I year old), 20% porous (local) Porcelain pots(!)

Near opaque, very glossy
Broad, dense nose, gorgeous juicy fruit (a touch of tobacco – oxidation?), blue/black fruits, leaf and creamy raspberry.

Broad and full, quite mouth-filling, fleshy and open with some inky touches and toast. Juicy raspberry fruit. Grainy tannins, some sap, overall pretty silky, nicely balanced in a big style and great length. Yum!

Not a fan. Not sure if it is the vintage, the blend (not sure what) or something else. Thin and uninteresting. Left half the bottle on the table.

2/3/23, 10:54 AM - I just got an offer for this from WineSlash for $28. They’re saying, 71% Cabernet Red Blend
    Includes SLV, Fay, & Artemis
I reckon I’ll pass on it

Funny, I argoned out a glass of this on two different nights over the past several days. My thoughts were, “This tastes like wine that someone added water to.” Why would I pay $59.99 for watered down wine? Tonight I had a martini after a strenuous golf outing (yes, poor me) and I needed something while watching Inventing Anna, so I just plain popped the cork to finish the rest of the bottle. I found it very intriguing and bright and fun. Now I’m confused. I think I won’t dabble in Pinot more. I think it’s that crazy bitch that you can never figure out and she leaves your wallet empty, and in the end you wish you never met her.

1/8/23, 7:27 AM - I don’t write a lot of notes because I feel like I’m lousy at describing wines. So many notes i read aren’t helpful at all. I liked the couple of notes I read of yours, so I’ll be looking out for them going forward.
Doing dry January but still in the game. I find it much easier to not drink wine than to not buy wine. Last time I did this I spent hella $ 🤦‍♂️

1/11/23, 9:35 AM - Well, I made it 11 days. JJ Buckley sent a March pre-arrival offering this morning for 2020 Chateau Siran at $32.50/btl. It’s right down the road from THE Chateau Margeaux. I’ve been buying it for the last the last two years on Jeff Leve’s recommendation, and i didn’t want to break the string (excuses, excuses). It does need considerably more cellar time than most wines would want in this price range, but I trust Jeff. CT actually has bottles going back to 1919 listed, and I think they’ve been coming on strong lately.
Going for a tasting/lunch trip to Napa next weekend organized by a gal I really trust, so I’m excited. Good excuse to take a day off from dry January—Cheers
