2016 Result of a Crush Syrah The Unnamed Series Walla Walla Valley

Day 1 - Mildly foxy/spiced/sweet nose consisting of blueberry jam, red hawthorn candy bar, violet, and a hint of worcesterberkshre sauce. A lot more pleasant in the mouth - the texture is soft and thick, tannins are ripe and sweet, backed up by medium integrated acidity. Attack is coarse textured like cloudy bottom part of matured red with a lot of soft sediments, but that melts into finer grains, and it gives a lot of rich umami as it dissolves in the mouth. Very gentle, clean but still substantial, almost like oregon pinot-like take on syrah. At $20, it’s extremely good value. 90.

Completely oxidized and undrinkable on day 3. No much life left (if this is not from storage condition in the store). Minus 1 point.

9/19/23, 10:52 AM - Thanks for the comment, I totally get prosciutto, bay leaf, and bacon mentioned in your last note. I put “mild” before “foxiness” because it was more than subtle - it was just relatively mild compared to hardcore foxy hybrid varieties. My bottle got oxidized quickly, so it might be overdue or storage condition at the store was not great. I still enjoyed it for $20. Sounds like your past bottles were better, now I’m curious to try other vintages/wines from this producer.

9/21/23, 12:34 PM - Yes the availability of wines from WA is limited in NY - I’m traveling WA now (sadly going home soon) and it’s a good opportunity to try great producers like Reynvaan. Will definitely keep my eyes on “In the Rocks”, hopefully the winery waitlist will open up soon. Rock funk is something I would love. Thanks again.

Totally closed at initial 30 mins. After that, constantly shifting nose consisting of top notch black tea, red fruits (cherry, raspberry, red plum), green citrus (lime), cinnamon and red flowers (rose/hibiscus) on day 1. Additional hints of iron and truffles (surprisingly for a young wine) on day 2. In the mouth, high (-) in acidity, and high tannins, with burning sandiness. Medium finish with a hint of menthol. Too young, but excellent potential. I remember Chambers Street Wines described this producer’s Barolo as burgundian, “Chambolle musigny-like” more specifically. This entry level bottle is rather Gevrey Chambertin-like, if that makes sense.

7/15/23, 11:32 AM - Thanks for your comment, I look forward to seeing your tasting note of this wine after cellaring (it would be excellent). I love Chambers too, there picks are very consistent. Cheers!

Much tighter than previous consumptions in 2020 and 2021. Still a solid Nebbiolo and a good value, but the magic was lost.

Day 1 - Color: Bright garnet combined with some brick, appetizing. Sharp and rock solid acidity, dry tannin, with dusty dried sour cherries and hibiscus. 89.
Day 2 - opened up a little, with additional layers of rose petal, fresh cherry, and raspberry, 90.

2/27/23, 11:13 AM - Thank you for sharing your recent experience and thoughtful comments. Your point regarding “the wine needs more time when it feels tight” is totally valid, and I deleted the word “drink up” from my note.

I’m still inclined to say that the bottle I had was better at “youthful fruited stage”, based on the day 2 experience after it opened up a little. This doesn’t mean that I consider this wine as just a generic Langhe Nebbiolo - this is a lot more than that and belongs to its own special category to me. Since your bottles are in good condition now are are still improving, I wish I had more bottles of this to keep track of how it evolves. I look forward to seeing your next notes over the next three years.

2017 Dirty and Rowdy Mourvèdre Old Vine Enz Vineyard Lime Kiln Valley

Day 1 - Nose - intense and layered cranberry, ripe blueberry/blackberry, purple/red flowers and wet black stone. Palate - medium+ amount of sweet tannin with silky surface and chewy core. Well integrated medium++ acidity is giving cool restrained tension. No unnecessary amount of oak. Medium+ long finish. Overall, beautiful combination of deep fragrant aroma and tight concentrated medium+ body. In old world Mourvèdre context, this reminds of roussillon/fitou than alicante or bandol. It’s still day1 and closed but utterly impressive already. 90-91.

Day 2 - opened up, gained additional layers of lavender and prune. Much softer than day 1, with nice horizontal breadth maintaining consistent intense core. Solid 91.

At $18, this is significantly underpriced for an individualistic Californian natural wine.

Opened and consumed over five hours.
Pale golden yellow.
Initially a funky nose, that blew off after some time. (this wine could have used a decanting) Quince, wet hay, some citrus notes off the nose.
Rounder with a nice acidity, and hints of sweetness. Some canned pineapple notes. Some light smoky notes. Medium finish, but faded.
This wine drank best at a more ambient room temperature. Don't consume too cold, and decant this bottle for an optimum drinking experience. This wine could get better with some ageing.

4/18/21, 6:27 AM - Thank you for you comment on my note.
I found your note very insightful especially regarding the temperature/decanting recommendations (I started from cold and consumed slowly to give it time to warm up in the glass/bottle - and witnessed the exact same change). Also I’m curious to try aged version of this (in my experience similarly styled Poully Fuisse aged beautifully). Regarding broader regional/climate context I have to study/think more (or have to stop thinking and just enjoy wine)... Cheers!
