This bottle was much better than two had last year. I think there is a fair bit of bottle variation with this wine. This bottle was classy syrah, with dark berries, lots of black olive (which I love in a syrah), and smoked meat (like Middle Eastern shawarma , another note I love, and get in certain left bank Bordeaux). It is medium-bodied, certainly no blockbuster, but with refreshing acidity, good balance, and very "more-ish" as the Brits say. Glad to have a few more to follow over next few years. Rating: 91

9/23/22, 2:28 PM - Great review and notes. Villard makes such great wines. Even the entry-level Serenies is a smoking value!

I have noticed a little bottle variation as well as a little brett. One bottle was undrinkable as the brett overwhelmed, but another was excellent. Everything is in balance which I love. My wife can’t get down with the olive/briney vibe on most French Syrah, but that’s one of the charms of Syrah.

Anyway, cheers to great wine and those that farm and produce it.

Very aromatic nose, heavy with apple and floral - and maybe a slight touch of distracting marzipan, but very slight. Rich mouth. Moderate acidity. Round but pleasant finish. Drinking really well now, and would not expect this to reward any aging. Really well balanced now, but won't be once it loses any of its fruit or acidity.

Deep-to-opaque ruby in color, this wine follows with aromas and flavors of wild berries, crushed rocks and more than a tolerable amount of brett. Full-bodied, freshly acidic, seamlessly alcoholic (14.5%) and with medium-weight, dry tannins, it falls short in the middle and closes with a tart, short finish. A bit too much "rusticity" with this one, despite Chapoutier's pedigree. Drink now-2018.

First of all, I do not like the 100 pt scale, so pay attention to my notes, not my points. Don't believe the hype. I rarely poor a glass down the drain... But i poured this pinot down the drain. I appreciate the history of the vineyard, but this is not my style. Aroma hits hard with heavy spiced potpurri, sweet dried fruit compote, cola, vanilla and oak. Big mouthfeel, more sweet vanilla and spice, mid is oaky, smokey and finish is more of the same. I am just glad this was a gift.

12/7/14, 11:19 AM - There was nothing wrong with the cork or wine. It's just not my style of wine. Again, I appreciate the site, the vineyard practices and how well the grapes are handled, but it's just not my gig. I love wines that are well structured with good fruit, a nice texture and above all else balanced. For me this wine was none of that. But for lovers of very ripe wine with sweet oak and spice then I think this is probably something they would love! Even wifey did not like it and she usually likes a riper style wine than I do.
