Maybe a bit early to drink, but hey it's a global viral pandemic and I'm locked inside. Nose of apple blossom, fallen leaves, wildflower honey, tobacco, smoke, soil. Giving this 2+ hours time really opened it up as young as the bottle is. Taste of strawberry, red fruit, soil, thin but present tannin and a great long finish. Had with filet mignon, spring potato, asparagus. Paired well with the lighter cut of meat. Extremely yummy.

Here I found a rich and exotic display, showing ripe apple, peach and almond, offset by savory notes of moist earth, minerals and hints of salty sea air. It was both sweet and savory, yet remarkably fresh, with soft, enveloping textures, almost oily, as acids cleansed the senses, leaving a mix of ripe apple, pear, citrus, and saline-minerals with sweet inner florals. The finish was long and incredibly balanced, as its oily textures slowly faded, leaving hints of savory herbs and yellow florals. It was so balanced, enjoyable already, but there was so much going on in the glass that I can only imagine that it will get better.

2013 Aubert Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
Hate to be the one review out here that scores this wine low but this is a typical example of everything that is wrong with Cali Pinot. The essence of Pinot is lost in the chase of making this wine for roundness and being this big/jammy hodgepodge of nothing and all of the features from wood that the grape does not bring to bear. Disappointing.

This was really lovely for the $25 price tag...Notes of crushed stones, lemon, & green apple rise up out of the glass. On the palate it's lean and focused with bright acidity and a medium length finish that is more mineral than fruit...yet of so lovely. I would gladly buy again...

Got this for 60 USD, which is somewhat of an impulse buy to try some very aged Barolo from a legendary vintage and a maker oft compared to the likes of Gaja. This is the first wine I have ever had that is this old, let alone one where the winery exists no more. Surprisingly, the cork came out in one piece despite the age. The bottle is not decanted, for fear of disintegration, but given a good 2 hours to let the wine stretch its legs. It pours a garnet, brick orange color with incredibly long, uniform legs and considerable amount of bricking. It is somewhat cloudy even. On the nose, the wine sings beautifully with a thickness that is redolent of properly aged Bordeaux. Tertiary at core, the concentrated bouquet yields plenty of musk, burnished leather, sous bois, truffles, smoked meats, macerated cherries, thyme and tobacco. Voluptuous, intense and masculine in stature, the generous palate mirrors the nose and certainly vouches for the pedigree and the vintage. Mild acidity attacks first, followed by finely integrated but once-grippy tannins. Flavors of sour cherries, anise, burnished leather, old books, tar and tobacco dominate. As time goes on, the muskiness and acidity blow off a bit and the wine gains in richness. Finish is very long for a wine that is 52 years of age, lasting almost half a minute. The juice then ends in a licorice-laden, intensely smoky and slightly acidic note. This is my first Barolo, and the first red I have ever tasted aging 50 years and more. Without much experience to compare with, I still find the wine immensely enjoyable, no less because of the price quality ratio but also because of the old-school, traditionalist approach (for example, seeing very little oak). Very few producers do it like that these days for sure. What an incredible find.

This 2004 is the current release from the winery so I can't understand how there are a few reviews on Cellartracker for younger vintages.

I think this Bodaga is on the rise, having cleaned up some of their winemaking practices.

This is good Rioja. Oddly my opinion has wavered across several bottles. First time it seemed surprisingly tight/young for a 12 year old wine. Other bottles less so. I can't decide if this is extraordinary good value, or just good value. I will try again.

Opened and drank off the pop-and-pour with roasted salmon, rice, and mixed veggies. Dark, cloudy ruby-crimson color. The nose brings raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, and hints of lavender, incense, and cloves. The palate is medium and still very compact (after 12 years), bringing strawberries, dark fruit, black licorice, wild herbs, and some nice funk. The finish is still quite tannic and dusty, especially after a few glasses, so this guy should go through 2020 easily. Lovely, rustic, straight-off-the farm Beaujolais from Kermit.

7/22/16, 7:47 AM - Wow, thanks! I bought a few 2004's from Kermit and was wondering if I should drink them up as the 2006 seemed to be at the end of its run. Cheers!

This is a great wine. Especially for the price. I don't remember enough to describe it now, but I buy a bottle every couple months and am always happy that I did.

6/8/16, 6:32 AM - Hi - I loved this wine when I had a few years back but I can't seem to find it anymore. Where do you see this stocked?

  • ravikalaga commented:

6/9/16, 11:46 PM - Far away is right. I am in the Bay Area. I emailed a few times direct to the Winemaker but no response. Ohh well; you are better off to have this local.

    Cheers!

I generally love Littorai, but the QPR is difficult to rationalize anymore. To start: lots of acid and structure on day 1 with an influence that was definitely leaning towards Burgundy, but a fruit profile that suggested CA...although just barely. Not particularly aromatic, really closed overall, and I usually love this vineyard. I think a few things are going on here. 1) This needs time, and plenty of it to unwind as it was better on day 2. I'd say 3-5 years before even touching it again. 2) It's probably better with food. This is not your average Williams Selyem delicious sipper.

That all being said, there's a TON of great pinot noir coming out of California, and at this price point ($65-70/bottle) you're starting to veer into 1er cru Burgundy $, at which point I don't really see the point. It's not that it wasn't a good bottle of wine, I just think there are much better values out there and this should be singing for the $.
  • ravikalaga commented:

4/9/16, 10:23 PM - Agree with your observation. Tasted a bunch of Littorai today and it was a feeling of wanting to like them over the wine being a stand-out especially at the price point.

what a nice little value discovery compliments of Costco. Light and red fruit driven as you would expect from Carneros. Nice balance of body and acidity; meaty enough mid-palate, and nothing off-putting. Can't ask for much more for a Pinot under $20.
  • ravikalaga commented:

4/4/16, 10:21 AM - Costco is selling this for under $20? I got it for $26 from the Domaine. Any idea if all Costco's carry it or somewhere specific?

4/4/16, 9:00 PM - Got it. Thank you! I will look to see if there are some here in the bay.
