Powerful fruit with a hot nose. The alcohol content it entirely appropriate and the smooth yet slightly simple tanins mean it’s a joy to drink young. A long, lingering, creamy finish which is the highlight. $35 dollar wine never tasted so good.

Christmas cake in a bottle: stone fruit, spices, heavy and dense. Matured in 2-5 yr old French oak hogheads. A solid Heathcote Shiraz, however loads of competition with Shiraz producers in Heathcote these days, and so pricing is key if I was to make this a regular staple. There are other producers at a lower price point using 100% new oak- to each their own- but i'm a fan of new oak.

9/21/17, 8:27 PM - Thanks. 100% agree with you. Soil is so important. Just saying though...good quality new oak (used well) does help enhance the flavors imparted through soil. Sadly other winemakers have 'abused' the use of new oak to mask wine imperfections and hence I believe we have swung too far thinking it's all about the soil of late, and downplay the importance of oak. Good quality soil and terroir, plus good winemaking and "new oak" used well- is perfection in my books (to each their own). Just look at the history of modern-day Barolos as a case in point. They are about 5 years ahead of where Australia is currently.

Very drinkable. Lots of focus is required here because it's so easy to just guzzle this down without appreciating its sheer beauty. When taking the time to think about what you're drinking, there is cherries, bright berry flavours, cream and lively racy acidity. Enjoying this on a bright sunny spring day in Arrowtown. One of life's great pleasures.
