2017 Tenuta di Renieri Chianti Classico Chianti Classico DOCG Sangiovese Blend, Sangiovese
James Suckling rated this 93 points. Apparently, he enjoys the flavor of tin cans. Cheers!

3/13/21, 8:49 PM - Hah! He seems to have developed a good brand for himself. I just got an email from Rutherford Hill, offering me a Cabernet Sauvignon he rated at 93. They were asking $120 for the privilege. I deleted the email... I'll wait for someone else to rate it.

I rarely buy Napa cabs and this wine illustrates perfectly why. I don't get why they are famous at all, this is not inexpensive, so I expected some quality.. But there's nothing to it, but not offensive either. .. a bit too alcoholic, too sweet, not much else.

8/31/19, 6:16 PM - How much Napa cabernet sauvignon do you buy, exactly, for $20?

  • LuisMaimoni@Yahoo.com commented:

10/21/19, 4:48 PM - I'm not sure you understood what I meant in my comment. Most Napa Cabs are much, much more expensive than $20. If you spent $30 on this, you're likely to spend $75 on a $50 bottle which is more in the normal range for that region's wines. Point being, if you found $20-$30 expensive then yes: Napa wines are not for you.

Served for extended family Christmas dinner. Lots of fruit, built for current consumption. Overall disappointing @ $20. I was in a hurry and did not do my homework before purchasing.

9/29/19, 7:23 PM - I agree with your assessment. It's not bad, but for ~$20 I'm expecting a little more. The different fruits identified in the marketing - blackberry, currants, black cherry, and cocoa - may be present but it tastes and sniffs like a one-note wine.

Journeyman decent CS, bit composed and not all that fascinating but often on the wine list and a safe choice if not too overpriced.

5/25/19, 5:59 PM - 98 points? that seems a bit generous for a "safe choice if not too overpriced."

You know. I kinda want to hate this wine being that the Monte Rosso fruit is owned by a massive corporation and some of my fave zin producers are no longer getting grapes (Bedrock, Carlisle, etc).....but I just can't. It's a really good zinfandel with blue and black briary fruits, ample acidity, and a relatively long finish. A very well made wine from one of the best old vine vineyards in CA. 'Sellin out' has never tasted so good.
  • LuisMaimoni@Yahoo.com commented:

9/18/17, 8:41 PM - Yes, Gallo is a massive corporation. I was up in the vineyard as a guest last weekend and met the winemaker as well as the woman that runs the farming operation. They are doing a lot of the right things, including collaborating and testing to make the best possible wines, sustainably and responsibly. I ran my own business for over 20 years and feel I know passion for a product when I see it, and it was pretty clearly in evidence. Monte Rosso, for now, is in good hands. And hey: it's not like the grapes are going to waste.

  • LuisMaimoni@Yahoo.com commented:

9/19/17, 7:53 AM - More like the opposite. There may be parts of the vineyard or mountaintop or appellation that Gallo/Louis Martini don't own or control, but for the vines they own - each plant is monitored, groomed, discussed, argued over, and finally jealously harvested. They view their production as limited by the grapes they can grow there. They know, for example, that they could sell alot more Monte Rosso Zinfandel if they made more of it. But, they have to make Mountain Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. They also, this year, produced a Moscat Amabile which surprised most of us. But, if you like sweet wines, look for it. Yummity yum!

Not great wine, but very good wine, especially at this price point (around $10). Medium green-gold color, enchanting nose, with apple and flower notes. Wonderful balance, with just the right combination of apple, citrus, oak, and minerality. Crisp, without an excess of acidity. Smooth, fairly long finish. Just lacks depth. To my mind, this tastes like what a California Chardonnay should taste like. Fits in that niche where one can drink it by itself, or pair it with a wide variety foods. Well done. Highly recommended.

7/21/17, 8:17 AM - This review is excellent in that it expresses what's great about the wine while acknowledging that sure, you can spend a lot more and get something better. It is a very good wine for $10+tax. Try it!
