3/13/21, 8:49 PM - Hah! He seems to have developed a good brand for himself. I just got an email from Rutherford Hill, offering me a Cabernet Sauvignon he rated at 93. They were asking $120 for the privilege. I deleted the email... I'll wait for someone else to rate it.
3/23/21, 10:14 AM - Agreed. I suspect there is some intention around his higher-than-appropriate rating style... something having to do with getting a lot more mention/promotion from wine retailers, yes?
8/31/19, 6:16 PM - How much Napa cabernet sauvignon do you buy, exactly, for $20?
10/21/19, 4:48 PM - I'm not sure you understood what I meant in my comment. Most Napa Cabs are much, much more expensive than $20. If you spent $30 on this, you're likely to spend $75 on a $50 bottle which is more in the normal range for that region's wines. Point being, if you found $20-$30 expensive then yes: Napa wines are not for you.
9/29/19, 7:23 PM - I agree with your assessment. It's not bad, but for ~$20 I'm expecting a little more. The different fruits identified in the marketing - blackberry, currants, black cherry, and cocoa - may be present but it tastes and sniffs like a one-note wine.
5/25/19, 5:59 PM - 98 points? that seems a bit generous for a "safe choice if not too overpriced."
9/18/17, 8:41 PM - Yes, Gallo is a massive corporation. I was up in the vineyard as a guest last weekend and met the winemaker as well as the woman that runs the farming operation. They are doing a lot of the right things, including collaborating and testing to make the best possible wines, sustainably and responsibly. I ran my own business for over 20 years and feel I know passion for a product when I see it, and it was pretty clearly in evidence. Monte Rosso, for now, is in good hands. And hey: it's not like the grapes are going to waste.
9/19/17, 7:53 AM - More like the opposite. There may be parts of the vineyard or mountaintop or appellation that Gallo/Louis Martini don't own or control, but for the vines they own - each plant is monitored, groomed, discussed, argued over, and finally jealously harvested. They view their production as limited by the grapes they can grow there. They know, for example, that they could sell alot more Monte Rosso Zinfandel if they made more of it. But, they have to make Mountain Red, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc. They also, this year, produced a Moscat Amabile which surprised most of us. But, if you like sweet wines, look for it. Yummity yum!
7/21/17, 8:17 AM - This review is excellent in that it expresses what's great about the wine while acknowledging that sure, you can spend a lot more and get something better. It is a very good wine for $10+tax. Try it!
