not a fan at all. Almost like drinking mud with a bit of sweetness around it

Insane dark garnet color on this, no bricking, you would have no idea this is 32 year olds from looking at it. The nose is definitely showing age with lots of tertiary elements and a bit of herbs that I've found in a few of these ravenswoods (that I thought was american oak but is not!). The palate still is plenty lively, also clearly showing its age and very savory but good acidity and medium body. Finish even has a tiny bit of tannin left but not drying. Great stuff!

Decanted 1 hour, fair bit of sediment. Cloudy brick color. Sappy red fruit, raspberry, strawberry. Some cola, baking spice and earthy notes. I did get the same effervescence mentioned below, but it blew off after an hour. Nicely aged classic Pinot.

From the Jan '21 PGC Library release. Moderate bricking on the pour. The most striking thing about this wine is the texture. Tannins fully resolved, leaving a caress like a fine cashmere blanket on a cold fall day. Sweet black cherry fruit, wood ash, decomposing flowers, and a bit of funky/prickly cinnamon spice that increases over time (low level brett?). Not the most depth and perhaps on the downslope from a flavor profile standpoint, but boy the texture is marvelous.

By day 2 (after vacuvin in fridge), the brett has taken over.

This has evened out and incorporated a good bit since I received it on release (and almost immediately opened the first bottle). the briny note is not quite as predominant and the dark fruit is showing itself a little more readily. a very tasty wine, but still super young. needs some air or some more cellar time IMO

2/7/21, 2:15 PM - SRH: We didn't decant it, but drank it over 3 nights, about a glass for my wife and a glass for me each night. night 2 was definitely a little more open, but I feel like it just still has some complexity that I know will come over time but its just too young to show still.

Honestly, a bit of a bummer. I love Chanterêves, but it seems that the grapes were picked early in a hot year; the wine is out of balance, with a green stem/vegetal character that kind of dominates and the quality of the acidity is a bit screeching. The fruit is quiet and elegant, but hopefully it’ll knit together better in time.

EDIT: I saved half the bottle after not really wanting to drink much more, and it is a bit better and more filled-out on Day 2. It's a more woody stemminess now - though still really dominant on the nose - and the green note has receded a bit, so I'd say hold this for a few years.

12/24/20, 10:48 AM - hey! I just wanted to suggest if you ever come across this wine again to give it another shot. We opened one last night (ill post the note when we finish the bottle tonight or tomorrow) and it was in a really great spot. didnt notice any greenness or vegetal character at all and the acid was integrated well. maybe it just needed a little more bottle time? Tomoko says it was her favorite wine they made in 2018!

This arrived a couple weeks ago and drinking fantastic! This is my all round favorite Champagne rose, bar none. Wish I could still buy it for $50 but easily preforms at $100+. Color tonight is a beautiful bright red hewed pink. Refreshingly alive berry and biscuit aromas. The refined, elegant palate reverberates with a complex array of; red fruits, mineral, spice, chalk and other flavor harmonics. This is so dam pretty. This would give another $160 rose' I has in January a serious run for its money. Stunning tonight with sushi. 94+

Deep dark brooding black and blue fruits. Not high acid, it does have some low notes. Not much tannins, very smooth reminded me of cab or cru beaujolis. End palate lingers. Seems high abv even though it’s probably low. At 13.7% felt over 14.

(6/29/2020) Keeps a long time in the fridge (weeks) and doesn't get oxidized much -so I am enjoying this. And I poured into a small bottle with screw cap to story. Liking the opportunity to retaste and seeing that it does keep without having to use a coravin++

Much better at 6/19. Keep in mind this need time to get air. Decanted 1.5x and was better. Probably 92 93

@golden8wines special up in here. Bought some off his recommendation and was not disappointed in the slightest.

2016 Clos St Joseph Syrah from Provence. No relation to the Northern Rhone St Joseph. Beautiful inky pure purple fruit. Seamless and driven by acidity but there’s weight that differs itself from its Northern Rhone counterparts. It’s mouth-coating and rich but balanced well due to the acidity. Explosion of violet and pepper on the nose. The wine is crazy accessible considering it’s a 2016.

Went back to the well for more but sold out :(

I see why Hardy declassified this. It lacks both the nerve/acid of most D&R wines and the punch. But I wonder if some of the disappointment is mental: am I tasting smoke because it’s actually there, or because I’m looking for it? Would be a good candidate to taste blind.
  • mattstolz11 commented:

8/26/18, 3:12 PM - i agree that I think its a mind-rut. Im sipping this same wine right now and dont get any smoke notes. it might not have the complexity of other D&Rs but its a clean, delicious wine! If you have more, I would definitely drink it blind with a few other comparable bottles and see what you think!

Fun, simple, easy drinking. Didn’t strike me as particularly Nebbiolo like, probably because of the age and little oak.
  • mattstolz11 commented:

6/26/18, 1:56 PM - Did you drink this at the winery? This wine isn't even in bottles yet. Was this maybe the Langhe Nebbiolo?
