Guess I’ll start the bidding here. Firstly surprised it’s 2014 as it drinks much younger, with verve and tension upon open. Nose had hints of pear and apple, palate much sterner. Took a while (1~2) hours to start opening a bit - ginger then some of the pine and hazelnut that is often sought after. You won’t be disappointed trying now, but if not for science still best to wait. Compared to Bouchard RDJ ‘21 (just because that’s the last memorable champ I had), this is way more serious, grown up in a way, and not immediately impressionable. RDJ was much better now, but I’m excited about where this could go. Think there’s potential for 2-3 points of upside

Nose: 91
Palate: 90

I wonder if this is in an odd spot. This felt out of balance, showing quite a bit more alcohol than expected, above the butterscotch, caramel, and vanilla foundation. Good but wanting more. Hopefully it improves?

First time trying Substance from Selosse and unsurprisingly I loved this wine. I tasted this up against the V.O. and frankly I preferred the V.O. What I observed as the main difference was the Substance was more pure, elegant and "classical" in the expression whereas the V.O. was even more sherry like and full bodied and textured - both on the nose and on the palate. There was obviously no doubt that both wines comes from the same wine producer but when loving oxidized champagnes V.O. is the favorite of the two. Worth noting that most people disagreed with me and preferred this one.
Disgorgement dates:
VO: 2020
Substance: 2022
Not sure two years would make such a difference? I have had a few VO's with the exact same character.

2018 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or Champagne Blend
Annual NYE Dinner and Champagne (My House): Disgorged July 2021. Is it me or is this cuvee seeing shorter sur latte time? I had thought these were typically 4 years after tirage? Doing the math here, this is only about 2 years? Hmm. I'm a devoted drinker of this cuvee and have been for a decade so was eager to see how the warmer year would reflect. Of note, and I wasn't begging the outcome, there is some austerity here. Grapefruit, lime peel and even some cranberry. Cranberry? Yes, I swear it's here. And yes, the expected tangerine and apple is also here. With air, this does add some richness, so the apple has some caramel on it, and some orange emerges, along with pineapple. But still the tension of the earlier tastes remains, the tarter edge, which I do like a lot. Man, the last few vintages of GCdO (notably 2016 and 2017) have all for me shows some cool edges.

Fantastic. Transcends the vintage. WOTN when tasted alongside Roumier, Ledru, Fourrier. You would never guess it is from one of Chablis hottest recent vintages. There is balance , complexity and poise at every moment of the experience. Very complete.

2012 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Chardonnay
Sell the house, celebrate with bubbles. My first look at 2012 Comtes.
This is a power house right on the attack, packed with shortbread, citrus, and a hint of rosemary. Expressive and deep, is pleasurable and interesting right now but is clearly coiled for more.

Out of 375 (and Diam) this is still very youthful and wound up. Light color. Chalky, with white fruits and lemon. Really linear, though with air and warmth it fans out a bit. Nice wine.

not blind, at the winery
Great champagne for this young age. It is a serious wine, probably the best Meunier wine maker in the champagne. If they can age I don't know but in his youth they are beautiful. 94

1/17/22, 8:29 PM - I recently had an LC13 a week after an LC18 and that limited experience suggests they age wonderfully. The 13 was much better integrated, and offered more focus and depth.

Stylish, Selosse-like Champagne.
I'd like to think of it as one of Selosse Lieux-dits Champagne.

Suble and Complex.

Open it slowly and taste it, you can feel the Complexity.
Don't drink at too low a temperature.

Whoa. Laser beams! Sharp, tingling acidity, ripe fruits, and a richness that almost borders on oxidized notes. Super intriguing chenin, immediately went out and bought more.
  • Ghoulardi commented:

7/18/21, 10:54 AM - I think a roast chicken, light cream-based pasta, or salmon/white fish would work quite well. Despite its richness, I’m sure oysters would be good, and perhaps even milder thai food.

My first Bertheau.
Pours a deep red with a bit of bricking right on the edges.
Bright red fruits, spice, and a bit of vanilla.
Mineral-driven, silky texture. Enrapturing, elegant, and exactly the type of burgundy I go nuts for. Now I need to find more!
