2019 Ravines Wine Cellars Dry Riesling Finger Lakes

Considering its 5 years old, amazing that this hits me with mineral and more mineral; very dry, lots of acid. some citrus on the palate and finish but definitely mineral driven all the way. Great stuff!
Does seem to be some bottle variation with the balance between fruit and mineral: this one got all the mineral!

No decant but still a little less intriguing than the last time. Might be going over the top ...

Pale yellow. A combination of green apples, minerals, fusel oil and unripe peach in both nose and flavors. Reminds me of a dry Schloss Johannisberg or a premier cru Alsatian Riesling. Great acidity means that it will continue to develop for some years to come. Better if not served too cold. Excellent value in quality dry Riesling. Albert Seltz of Albert Seltz Winery in Alsace says: "There is no wine that you do not like, only wine that you do not understand." Dry Rieslings are an acquired taste. This is a great example.

Red
2014 Viña Herminia Rioja Crianza Tempranillo
Viña Herminia Rioja crianza 2014. 14%vol. 5€ - 6€ retail.
12 months in American oak, 85% tempranillo and 15% garnacha. Charmless,
run-of-the-mill barrel-aged rioja with very little going for it. Slightly astringent, tight, very little fruit, little or no character, bland. Short, stingy finish. Certainly drinkable but why buy when there are two dozen plus riojas in the same price range which offer more flavour, oomph and pleasure?

10/12/20, 8:15 AM - 2 1/2 years later and this tasting note is still spot on. This wine is stunningly mediocre. Not sure what we paid for it since I got it as part of a group, but if the ~$24 average price stated here is accurate, yikes.

My first exposure to red wines from the Finger Lakes. Bought this one for "homework" before our visit to the region next summer. I'm clearly stopping by this winery. Love the rich fruit that's well balanced - not over-extracted like "supermarket" Pinots.

12/22/19, 1:57 PM - We are frequent visitors to the Finger Lakes and club members at Ravines--it sits on a great section of Keuka Lake near other great wineries. I would highly recommend a stop at Ravines and several of the wineries nearby such as McGregor, Domaine LeSeurre and Weis. Enjoy!
