Going against the grain on this one. Little disappointed with this one given others rating but very reasonably priced. Grenache dominated GSM. Fruit is pretty good but there is a doughy unbaked pastry and raisin undercurrent that pervades. Also low on acidity and tannins which leaves it “flat” tho not fat. About 84-85 at best.

Beautiful nose of spearmint, blueberry, and minerals. The palate has a core of red raspberry and saddle leather.

5/10/15, 7:12 AM - This wine was tasted as part of a 2004-2007 vertical. The 2007 was the consensus favorite of the group due to it's beautiful nose and silky texture. A second 2007 bottle was tasted a few days later. It was very consistent with the bottle opened a few nights before. The 2004 was more "Rhone-like". These wines definitely benefit from a 2-3 decanting. I felt that the 2005 & 2006 wines were drinking very well. All have many years of life remaining.

Wells no longer makes the JBV syrah, so I have moved on to Saxum's wines. They are outstanding as well.

5/10/15, 7:36 AM - I agree with your comment about Paso reds. They rival Napa cabs in their alcohol levels. They are an occasional indulgence, with Saxum Broken Stones as a favorite. I will check out Riverain syrah.

Floral nose with deep red fruit and light mint. On the palate, cranberry, saddle leather and grilled meat. Tasted 2004 through 2007 vintages of this wine. The 2004 benefited and needs a long decanting. The '04 was the biggest wine of the four.

5/10/15, 7:20 AM - The 2004 is the most "Rhone-like" of the 4 vintages we tasted. It reminds me of a Chateauneuff du Pape. It is a dense, big wine that needs decanting. It begs for grilled meat, stew, or vegetables!
