Everything ToniTony said almost 8 years ago and then some!
Still holding beautifully on day 2.

4/19/24, 3:07 PM - I suppose it depends on how well the wine is cellared. I drink a lot of wine this old and older and am rarely disappointed. Currently, I think the 2004 Pinots are tasting great.

More acid than fruit, more fragrance than flavor, this vintage of Chateau d'Yquem is well past its prime. Unless you're seeking a birth year Sauternes to commemorate a birthday or special occasion, at the prices being asked for this vintage, avoid buying this wine.

Great fruit, tannins are totally resolved. Very smooth with lots of berries, some oak and leather on the nose and palette. No hard edges...drinking beautifully. Drank straight from bottle and was ready to go.

This was opened after a badly flawed and maderized '74, with the hope it might show better. Fortunately, it did, but unfortunately, it was still bad. Pristine fill and cork, but poured a murky ruby color, though not as cloudy as the '74. Tart, with some cedar and cassis notes, this was drinkable but not particularly enjoyable. 0/2 on aged Beaulieu's, I think I will avoid these in the future.

30x California 1978: So many wines from this great Californian vintage at the age of 45 certainly qualifies as a “once in a lifetime” event. A few observations: 1) The quality was very high (almost all my ratings above 90pts). And only four faulty wines (2x corked, 2x over the hill/flawed, sadly those two were the Ridge Monte Bello and the Phelps Insignia). 2) The wines are ready to drink, the tannins have melted but the tension and freshness remain high - across the board. 3) There is still lots of fruit left and I was surprised how most wines didn’t show lots of tertiary aromas (find me the Bdx 1982 without tertiary aromas!). IMO, more than a handful of the wines could continue to improve for a few years. 4) Style wise, these are obviously quite different from today’s Napa wines with much less ripeness and more mineral accents. But hardly any wine we had would be mistaken for a Bordeaux in a blind tasting (unlike 80s/90s Dominus). 5) Best reds: Inglenook Limited Cask, Beaulieu GDL Reserve, Stags Leap Cask 23 4.5l (all 96pts), Heitz Bella Oaks, Simi Reserve, Stag’s Leap Cask 23 0.75l (all 95pts). The best wine overall, however, was the magical Late Harvest Riesling from Phelps (98pts).

TN: Not much on the nose. On the palate a bit charmless, lots of minerality but not enough fruit sweetness to create a good balance. But don’t get me wrong, this is still a good wine with very classic proportions, very mineral driven.
  • Wyneaux commented:

4/22/23, 1:00 AM - I highly recommend the 78 Phelps Eisele if you can find a well stored bottle that you can afford. If not, you might try to find a 78 Mayacamas which Antonio Galloni gave a 100 about 9 years ago or the 78 Heitz Martha's which John Gilman gave a 97 about 6 years ago (and noted "drink between 2016 - 2050"!!!).

  • Wyneaux commented:

6/30/23, 11:28 PM - Oddly, I just noticed that according to my database, I have a 1982 Phelps Late Harvest Riesling somewhere in my cellar. Only 1 bottle tho, and no previous tasting notes....

There is very little left in the tank here. And that small tank is nearly on empty. The cedar, tobacco, herb and earthy nose is better than the smidgeon of fruit remaining on the palate. And this bottle was perfectly stored. Nothing lives forever.

Used 2 blade remover to avoid trouble with the cork.
Dark Ruby with brown showing at the rim.
Some sediment.
Bouquet was beautiful and strong. Raisens, gravel, leather, plums, violets.
It was full on the mouth with all the beautiful complexity of the bouquet. Tannin had softened and the luscious finish was pleasingly long.
What a perfect wine to accompany New Year's Eve's reflections!

Using a Coravin to enjoy this beauty. The nose right out of the bottle was a bit musty. I was afraid it could be corked. With the pour a defined plum / orange color was evident. I decided to just let it sit in the glass and let the air do its magic The mustiness has begun to wisp away after about 30 minutes. The 58 year old wine maintains it Tempranillo characteristics Soft on the front with hints of alcohol The backend lends itself subtle spice with slight cayenne and subtle chalk. Going to let this to continue to open up.

  • Wyneaux commented:

11/18/21, 11:26 PM - Maybe you need to try this wine again? Maybe you had a poorly stored bottled because yours seems to be the minority opinion and because of how Winesearcher's average weight system works, your score seems to be holding down what the average they report to 88.

  • Wyneaux commented:

11/19/21, 10:55 AM - Well technically, you rated a bottle unless you had multiple bottles from multiple sources, you should know the old saying: "There are no great wines, only great bottles." It appears that almost everyone else on CT has a different opinion of the 72 Martha's. Just suggesting maybe you had a bottle that was improperly stored at one point? As for the vintage, hard to necessarily tell a wine by it's vintage. In 71, Joe declassified his Martha's because of low quality but the 71 Ridge Eisele is legendary! Maybe Joe learned from whatever happened to him in 71?

And then there is this John Gilman review of the regular "Joe"... his 1972 Napa Cab...

    91 JG.
"This was the first time I have had the pleasure to drink a bottle of the Napa bottling from Joe Heitz from the 1972 vintage, and given the fair bit of mintiness here on the nose, I am guessing that perhaps this was one of those tail end of the vintage bottlings that might have been stretched with a bit of Martha’s Vineyard. The superb nose offers up a mature and vibrant blend of red and black cherries, Rutherford dust, petroleum jelly, a touch of cherry skin, gentle notes of chipotles and a nice touch of mintiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and à point, with superb complexity, melted tannins, bright acids and excellent grip and focus on the long and suave finish. A beautiful bottle of old school Napa cabernet sauvignon that is still at its zenith. John Gilman, View From the Cellar #58, Aug 2015

  • Wyneaux commented:

11/19/21, 11:35 AM - Looks like I amended my reply after your latest post but it seems you wouldn't care what John Gilman had to say anyway. I am not questioning that you had a tired wine, only that you seem to judge that wine in total by tasting only one bottle.

I had an experience in the late 80's with the 1974 B.V. Georges De Latour. Several people at the Winebox in Canoga Park opened their 750ml bottles that were over the hill yet every 375 ml bottle that I opened showed the wine to be highly structured with years ago. This was everyone's opinion, not just mine!

PS - Since you don't place stock in anyone else's review, why should I bother to tell you about my 1972 Martha's experience? You'll note that I seldom post reviews here.... I am not that good a verbalizing my experiences in the manner of most wine reviewers and I find it taxing to take notes during dinner.

  • Wyneaux commented:

11/19/21, 11:50 AM - Again, I cannot seem to get you to understand my point. I am not questioning your opinion of that particular bottle and I do read your reviews and find I mainly agree but when tasting older bottles of wine, I have found from over 50 years of tasting, that the bottle is what it is.... and another bottle of the exact same wine can be totally different.... much of it depends on how the wine was stored especially when the bottle is over 20 years old. But that is not all that can make a difference. I have worked in wineries so I know about bottling too and wine can come from different vats and different barrels that have never been mixed.... and so was the beginning of the OFS Dry Creek labeling when the winemaker found barrels that were much better than the rest..... as one example.

  • Wyneaux commented:

11/19/21, 12:56 PM - I don't have to buy any, I still have 2 left in the cellar plus 2 "regular Joe's" but you know it is OK to generalize from a large sample that something might be bad.... but not from a single sample.... that was re-enforced by the wine related statistics class I had at UC Davis when I got my degree in enology. It's also why the CDC conducts multitudes of tests before approving a drug or vaccine.... but hey go ahead and think what you want, it's a free country after all,,,,,

PS Winesearcher average price is over $1600.... guess there are a lot of saps out there....

First Tuesday Wine Group Annual Dinner. Wow! I never would have expected this wine to have so much life in it. No sign of lightening at the edges. Tons of spicy fruit, cassis, eucalyptus, cedar and mint. It just screamed "Napa" to me, although I know it's a Sonoma wine. Who says California cabs don't age well? There's no way this wine was this good upon release. It hasn't really developed secondary flavors; rather, the primary ones have just integrated and become more complex with time. Great body, and a long finish. This wine is certainly mature, but it's in great shape. I would imagine well stored bottles could keep for a couple more years - there's certainly enough fruit and structure left.

Much different then the last bottle we opened less then 2 years agp. Bought from a source who claimed to be the original owner and wine has been cellared since. The cork was wet about 1/2-3/4 of the way up but there was no evidence of seepage. the cork did crumble some when removed. i would say i got 3/4 of it out before the breakage occured. the color looked what i remembered...amber-like, almost orange when held under light. the nose however was way off. very, very musty...serious earthtones. all 4 drinkers thought the wine jsut didnt stay together. the fruit was dead. however.....i wasnt ready to give up. i tried the wine again 3-4 hrs later and it was a little better. i decided to keep it in the decanter overnight just to see what would happen. surprisingly, i just drank a glass and it was much better. the minty overtones were def present, but the wine still wasnt right. not sure if the fruit just died after 35 yrs or the seal was somehow compromised. i have 2 left, looking forward to trying them soon.

Guys night - You know the drill: First off, John Gilman, your drinking window for this wine is INSANE! INSANE! That's two insanes in all caps and exclamation marks. Why Cellartracker makes your drinking windows the default and overrrides users average, I do not know. For this wine, John Gilman says 2021 to 2075. Cellartracker average says 2003 and 2012. I am not saying that there is ever one right answer for a given wine, but to suggest that this wine is not ready to drink right now is, well, I already said it twice in all caps.

This was my bottle, slow o'd 5 hours. Upon pouring it, for the first 5 minutes, there was absolutely gorgeous fruit. Regrettably, that shut down, and the nose became uninteresting. The palate had red fruit, and with a small amount of time, it becomes dominated by wood, anise, and alcohol. Since there was about 1/3rd of a bottle left, I took it home, and it was almost exactly the same then - a drinkable but uninteresting cabernet with some heat, anise, and a bit of wood. I must admit that there was a touch of that eucalyptus note in this wine, but it didn't help much.
  • Wyneaux commented:

9/6/18, 4:53 PM - Sounds to me to be somewhat similar to most of the 1970-1979 (esp. the 79) Martha's I tasted during the 70's - 80's... so maybe, just maybe Gilman is more on the right track?.... the 78 just started to show itself off when it was 20 years old!... and yes the mint/eucalyptus usually shows better with air or when Martha's is older...

  • Wyneaux commented:

9/12/18, 4:43 PM - Yeah....there are no great wines... only great bottles... that said, it could be that older cab collectors didn't properly store their bottles due to being new to collecting while older Bordeaux collectors were already into the temp and humidity thing.... with that said.... in the late 80's, a friend of mine opened up about 20, 1978 2nd, 3rd growth Bordeaux and was terribly disappointed with most of them.... off aromas and flavors and little fruit... In 1998, I put on about a 40 bottle tasting of the 1978 Cabs.... almost all of the Napa Valley cabs were in the acceptable to great range with fruit remaining.... other places did not fair so well.... so who knows... and yeah, it is all anecdotal but I've yet to be disappointed with an old bottle of Martha's.... knock on wood....

Removed from the cellar cold, so I was surprised by the breadth and depth of the nose. It featured hoison and rice nuanced with red cherries layered over an earthy, even musty, punch. On the tongue, sharp acidity that derives from the red fruit, but this is supplemented by mint and pomegranate and, believe it or not, flashes of bubblegum. Tanzer, in his review, mentions Fleer, but I have to go with Double Bubble. This is one of those wine tasting moments where you can't believe that THAT taste, much less one identifiable by a unique gum producer, could be appropriate for a TN, but the suggestion is right on. Wine is awfully bright, and good, but not nearly as remarkable as the flavors it conveys.

Wines from this producer seem relatively hard to find, but I found a batch of 2003 Renard Sta Rita Hills Syrah on winebid.com, bought 2 of them about a month ago, and opened one tonight. Unfortunately, this bottle was not good. Perhaps too old, perhaps was not stored properly or flawed in some other way. Very sad, had high hopes for this bottle, the 2009 I had was wonderful.

If my memory serves me correct, I believe the 99 had a bit more tannin than the 2000, so it is probably still OK. I hope this helps. Please post if you try it.
