At Nico Osteria with dinner. This is an absolutely crystalline wine, with a lovely grapefruit note on the nose. The palate features a bit of sweeter white fruit, along the lines of pineapples, but there's quite an incredible density to this wine. The acidity is quite sharp and piercing, and a richer texture than you would expect from something like this. A real eye-opener. Thanks Bret, for the recommendation!

10/27/15, 11:53 AM - I've always loved this wine. There's something about the alpine wines that Rosenthal brings in - they ring my bell.

Dinner at RPM Steak (Chicago, IL): So, this is a fantastic wine at $25. Add a zero to that? Nah, not so much. The nose has tons of fresh green apple, and as Alan mentioned, sour beer. Lovely fresh acidity that just keeps going. There is a certain funk (I think it's a very minor oxidative element) that makes it clear that this isn't Burgundy (premox jokes aside), but this is excellent chardonnay in its own right. This would be a delightful wine to drink with some roast chicken on a lazy weekend afternoon, and while this is delicious, there's no way it has the complexity of a $250 bottle.

This was the first time trying the 2010 Faury SJ VV and it was quite nice. Hard to say there's much qualitative difference between this and the Gonon SJ's (which are far more "culty" at the moment). Nose had tons and tons of bacon and sausage with lots of dense, sappy dark fruits sprinkled around the meaty core. With air, the nose developed some nice olive and spice notes. The palate was cool and lithe with great dark fruits, subtle mint, floral notes, earth and meat. Can't wait to drink more!
