July 18, 2019 - Garnet black color with a massive throw of sediment. Deep, dark plums and cherries, with a dollop of licorice and cedar. This is a sexy wine. On the balanced finish, smooth spicy tannins and lingering complexity. Terrific!

This bottle was previously sampled with Coravin in April 2018. Remarkably, the same score.

July 9, 2019 - Delicious. Blackberry and black raspberry, with copious amounts of tobacco, herbs and sous bois. Very mellow, plush, with a firm enough structure to keep it lively. It seemed fully mature, more mature than I would have thought, although it got tastier and more aromatic as it aired out.

June 1, 2019 - Great structure and smooth as a babies a... lots of berries in the flavor and still has great color

May 17, 2019 - Cork was über dry but the wine has managed to hang on. A little dusty but still beautifully mellow, rich and balanced. A testimony to the longevity of Phelps Insignia. An American Icon.

January 27, 2019 - At The Wolf in Oakland. Decanted for 3.5 hours and served blind to Michael, Charles and Walter. Purple in color. Initially nose is a bit reticent , but quickly aromas of black fruit and breakfast pastry spices arrive, On the palate there are black raspberries, cassis and blackberries along with pencil shavings. Some nutmeg allspice and herbs lurk in the background. Beautifully balanced, this seems to have it all including a nice finish. This was served along side the excellent 1994 Mondavi Cabernet Reserve, but I believe the Insignia was even better. Michael and Charles say 2004 -2005 California Cabernet. Walter says 2005 Bordeaux (not a bad guess since this is a Bordeaux blend). Seems to be drinking a decade young. Delicious wine.
