November 28, 2019 - Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): From the wine list at Dulcis Vitis. This was much earthier than the '06 Bartolo Mascarello we had side by side. Some soy and mushroom on the palate here for me, with time in the glass it opened up more and the red fruit became more evident. This seems like it is in the drinking window and will not benefit from a lot of additional aging as the teritiary characteristics are coming through.

November 28, 2019 - Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): A touch of funk on the nose but that blew off. With a name like Brunate I expect this to be all power and intensity and it is more black fruited than red, but the more sandy soils also seem to keep it just a touch more nuanced and balanced than I would have expected. Touch less structure than there was on the Bartolo we had alongside. But very tasty.

August 19, 2016 - Vietti tasting with Lorenzo (Castiglione Falletto): Savoury aromas of balsamico, mint, dried roses, melted road tar, with a touch of secondary tartufi and porcini. Earthy, mushroomy, umami and evolved on the palate. Lorenzo thought the wine a little oxidised. Hoisin sauce, black tea, smoke and tar notes. Still plenty of structure here, but the tannins smoothed and largely resolved. Good freshness and acidity still present. Very enjoyable. However, not quite as good as the recent excellent 2001 Rocche di Castiglione. Based on this bottle, I'd drink these in the next few years but that view may be influenced by the bottle variation.
