Community Tasting Notes 3

January 22, 2016 - Really Old Chianti (Sunfish Cellars): A small pour at a tasting served alongside a few others. Definite bricking here. The nose on all these wines are spectacular. So complex, so nuanced, yet so fragile. Dusty, fermented cherries, mushroom, garrigue, lots and lots of subtle flavors and aromas. Yet, in the end, I have to admit this is a relatively thin wine that to me is past peak by quite a bit. Nose is 94, palate is 88 at best.

October 23, 2015 - Tonight I am wallowing and having a huge pity-party. It's the 10th anniversary of the worst night of my life. So I'm trying to brighten things up a bit and this is doing as well as anything else on earth could. It's got that dusty danky old stank nose. A touch of eucalyptus. Palate is light and bright - strangely fresh for something almost as old as I am (HEY, I'm still fresh, wtf). Cranberry, dusty cellar, mushrooms, tiny tartness, leather, white truffle on the palate. The complexity grows the longer it sits out. However, it's thinner (?) than the last couple times I've had it. The sommelier at 1313 Main in Napa (where I bought it) several months ago said to drink it soon as it's peaking....and he was right. It's fucking fabulous and I love it, but it HAS been better. So if you have it in your cellar, pop it now and revel in it before it gives up the ghost.

January 25, 2014 - Verticale Chianti Rùfina Fattoria Selvapiana (Radisson, Roma): Fiori amari, agrumi e pietre. Come se il tempo si fosse fermato. Bocca vivissima, colpisce il sale alla fine insieme alle erbe aromatiche e agli agrumi. Il mio preferito fino ad ora.
