January 9, 2024 - Texas Highlands 2010 Messina Hof Primitivo Private Reserve Cerro Santo Vineyard (gift in 2014). Mid-dark garnet, rim variation, viscous (13.9 alc.); red fruit, floral, ripe grape, bramble nose like its DNA brother, Zinfandel; low-mid acids; mid+ tannins; semi-hot, long, chewy red fruit and wood finish. w/pizza, pasta. 16.5/91.

February 11, 2012 - All in all, this wine showed a solid 83. At first after the pop, the initial waft from the bottle was all black pepper and dark black cherry. Seemed nice. Approx 2 oz sample removed, recorked, and sat for 3 hours. The sample was a very dark color with a nice purple inky hue. Flavor on the front of the palate is dominated by black cherry and a tiny bit of black pepper. Didn't really get much oak, but I guess that this is typical of a wine that is a) already in the bottle as a 2010 and b) due to this is not heavily oaked (or oaked at all). After a few years, the complexity of the black cherry and black pepper did improve significantly, but the structure did not. There is just about zero oak flavor in this. No backbone. Just fruit, no finish but there is a bit of pepper. If serving wine to a crowd, this is your choice for nondiscriminating palates. I would love to see Messina Hof barrel age their wines, especially this one, because the potential is there - - - - it's just TOTALLY absent in this vintage.
