    February 3, 2024 - Bring a Great Nebbiolo (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Double-decanted for an hour at about 3pm.] What can I say. This one never disappoints. Dark black fruit and spice in the nose. Big and rich in the mouth. Explosive in the mouth with a finish that lasts forever. Wow!

    Oh my. A lung filling nose. Cherry fruit, rose, pastille, spice cake, balsam, all with a sense of gravitas and depth in contrast to the effusive florals of the Asili wines. Expansive, on the palate. Vertical and broad. Another texturally 3D wine with fantastic inner mouth perfume and a sense of power without weight. This has an extra gear to it. Incredible balance. there is a ton going on, but this just seems to have it all comfy composed and together with a sense of effortlessness. While already fantastic, I think this wine is going to be monumental in a decade. 98++ Thanks BG

    November 7, 2023 - 2023 Barolothon; 11/3/2023-11/10/2023: Decanted for 1-2 hours and served blind. I only got to enjoy a glass since this bottle was shared with the group. This was my first experience with an aged Giacosa, so my review might be a little inflated in comparison. I've also always known I would enjoy the Giacosa red labels solely based on the recurring notes I’ve seen for these bottles over the years. I came nowhere near guessing this blind, but I sure as hell knew it was something special. This is my kind of wine in every way. The palate and aroma transported me to an Italian butcher shop with bursting notes of sweet meats, balsamic, and smoke. The delicate finish of fresh iron, rose petals, and candy-like tannins kept me returning for more. Needless to say, this glass went down very, very quickly.

    This had everything I’d want in the balance between power and delicate, fresh acidity that I love in a Barolo. Although I didn’t get to enjoy this for the whole night to see how it would evolve, it was still my WOTN and is in the top spot for my WOTY right now. It was a privilege to taste this wine, and I hope to try another Giacosa Red label in the future. I just wish these were a little more price accessible because I would be buying them up like crazy to experience that again! 97-98

    November 5, 2023 - This bottle of '01 Rabaja was a bit less thrilling than the best I've had, but was still super impressive. In a way, this bottle was more youthful than others I've had, so perhaps it just needed more time to emerge. The wine stands out for the signature Giacosa sweetness.

    On the nose, I found black fruit, sweet spices, tar, roasted meats, and dark floral tones, a dark and somewhat savory profile, but immediately you can tell the sweetness and depth of the fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium in body and super finessed, with very little tannin, with sweet dark fruit, roasted meats, tar, and a bit of balsamic / sweet spices. This bottle showed less of the explosive balsamic notes I've found in other bottles of this wine in the past.
