December 2, 2023 - Just entering peak drinking phase. On opening, musky nose - you get a big whiff of petrol followed by ripe yellow orchard and tropical fruit - starfruit, apricot, nectarines, mangosteen, yellow plum, lemon cream. Very perfumed with inner mouth aromatics on each sip. Beautifully balanced. Creamy midpalate with medium acidity and long mineral slate finish.

November 26, 2022 - Bright light yellow. Still looking like a youngster. Apricot, green apple, white flowers with mineral notes. Very focused and intense, both on the nose and palate. Acidity balances the off dry palate. Long. Lots of life left.

September 6, 2022 - The 2012 Franz Hirtzberger Riesling Smaragd Singerriedel is intense, yet at the same time finessed and wonderfully fresh, with mango, baked pear, sweet cream, and yellow flowers, then turning savory with a mix of chive, ginger and crushed rocks on the nose. Its weighty textures are perfectly lifted by jolting acidity and intense stoney mineral tones, as savory spice gives way to green apple, young pineapple and a cascade of inner florals. A coating of primary fruit concentration still lingers on the senses as nuances of white pepper and sour lime slowly fade. The 2012 is still so dense yet with energy to spare.

July 31, 2022 - Stood out in a bigger line-up. Apricot, minerals, white flowers, fresh and zesty, very convincing. Felt elegant, more like a Mosel/Nahe Riesling than a heavy Austrian Smaragd. Well judged, kudos team Hirtzberger. 95+

May 7, 2022 - 10 years after Riesling tasting - 2012 (Restaurant Holz und Feuer, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Sophienwald Universal
Clear, pale golden color. Classic Wachau nose, lots of acacia, crushed stones and ripe stone fruit.
This wine clearly polarizes. You either love the style or you hate it. I love it. Full bodied, but the power is beautifully wrapped and the wine is elegant and in a very good balance. Clear fruit, clear botrytis. Acacia and honey. Wonderful pressure and tension. Long and lingering finish. No need to hurry, will stay on this level for a decade and will probably improve. 94-95+
