  June 12, 2015 - We tasted several wines in the winery of Karl Erbes' winery in Ürzig.
  
  In general we did not find the very positive reviews in some of Germany's wine media, or the high scores on cellartracker justified. The dry wines were completely average for the Mosel region, in fact more typical for the more unknown winemakers' quality, and the sweet ones (allegedly the speciality of this winemaker) were quite okay but lacking the complexity and acidity to be excting on any level.
  
  Relatively speaking we found this wine the best there so bought some bottles to study it further.
  
  The experiences of two further bottles have been consistent with first impressions: quite good, quite okay, but really nothing special. This is a well drinkable wine with a much lower complexity or concentration than what "spaetlese" and "alte reben" would imply. To be fair, the price was also quite low at EUR 8.50.
  
  All in all: halfway between okay and good, and we continue to see no reason to regard Karl Erbes higher than the (admittedly high) base qualities to be found anywhere around the Mosel.

  September 9, 2014 - A Visit To Weingut Karl Erbes (Weingut Karl Erbes, Urzig, Germany): The nose shows tart, icy gooseberry scents mixed in with wild brush. Icy flavors show immediately on contact, followed by young peaches. It's bright, clean, and fresh with a touch of pineapple fruit providing sweetness.
