Community Tasting Notes 4

July 23, 2020 - We thought, what else could we add to the few other Notes here on CT, those are all so GOOD and appropriate for this grabber!

This is without a doubt, the most complex, and highest scoring Italian red we have ever enjoyed... Sassicaia some day!!!

Never have we sunk into a vin where the fruit was so many layers down that it took us an appetizer to get to it... All while we were busy discussing the leather, the heat, the smoke and pepper and commanding attention and the confidence of this massive, masculine wine.

It does remind us of the 20 year old high-end Penfolds we've enjoyed through the years, in that it does have so much to chew on, so much to get into, so many layers of complexity. However, it stands on its own in that there's virtually no sweetness. While at the end of the day you know it's grape, there so many other things going on that you’re too busy trying to discern and isolate them from one another, to talk about them. It’s just so intoxicatingly good...

We think of the finest leather belts picked up from Turkey, or the Italian leather jackets from Florence that smell so rich you just wanna hug’em for hours... What comes up next, another flavor gift.

The idea, with a burrata, basil and balsamic w silky extra virgin olive oil and perfect pasta. Some steamed broccoli. It's like being back in Italy when everything was 2 or 3 ingredients and tasted a 1000% better than stuff back home- stuff that had 20 ingredients- or the “same”- products within it, but just couldn't match...

This Schioppettino Rocks. And while it may be so dry, technical, sophisticated and not sweet, that we may prefer a different Top Shelf beverage for our 1st choice, there are few grape juices as downright commanding as this monster.

It's like if Mr. Nicholas VanOrton and Thomas Crown chased down The Counselor’s Malkina and had a baby, this sophisticated, aggressive, cuff linked beauty would be it...

Would be great to have more. But this is a bottle we’d want to actually plan to open; as it could overwhelm with its girth.

    Wow. Enjoy!

March 26, 2017 - Decanted. Easily one of my contenders for wine of the year. Extraordinary and soaring aromas of coffee grounds, licorice, leather, quinine, black (and I mean black!) fruit both overripe and in liqueur, goudron, black spice, black olive. Not a hint of sweetness - this wine shows plenty of animal and spice notes to balance the fruit. On the palate this massive (17.5 per cent alcohol), but also strangely spry, with the wood and the alcohol extremely well integrated. As is typical with Schioppettino, the acidity shines through. But the prismatic palate is truly extraordinary. Black fruit liqueur (especially damson and blackberry), smoke, graphite, longan (!), blueberry, asphalt, leathery and tobacco notes, some dark chocolate. Espresso on the finish. A triumph of the notion of balanced bittersweetness. This is drinking very well right now, and should continue to improve.

Quite simply this is one of the best reds from North-Eastern Italy at a phenomenally low price for the quality. I would further add that despite the high alcohol, this shows no hint of creaminess on the palate. This is a virile wine, which has far more subtle power than more famous (and undeservedly far more expensive) Barossa Shirazes.

September 14, 2016 - Enjoyed this stunning (& unusual) wine at Trattoria No. 10 in Chicago last night. Remembered this varietal from my time in Fruili in the late 90s. Very unique and powerful. Spicy, dark red fruits. Inky dark in color - simply gorgeous in the glass. Very fine tannins with a finish that just keeps going. Still youthful after 8 years. Should last for a decade or more. Seek this one out if you can find it.

November 10, 2015 - A wine of incredible power and density. There is no way to describe how massive and chewy the palate is. Black licorice, pepper olive and leather barely show a hint of fruit, yet there is enough levity beneath the sheer weight of this wine to make it a hedonistic pleasure.
