September 25, 2022 - Russk. PnP it grabbed me right away. I brought to CDC at Andrea's. Perfumed nose, liquid mouth (not viscous), lovely rose, tar and grapefruit bitterness. A WOTN for me. What I like about Nerello. Get more.

April 27, 2020 - The 2014 Contrada Rampante is almost fully opaque deep garnet in color. This seemed to show best after 1.5 hours decanting, however it continued to evolve and add complexities throughout the 3 hours from pop to last drop. The nose showcases aromas of bing cherry, strawberry, licorice, rose and violet, leather, black volcanic earth, smoke, oregano, cinnamon, stony mineral, and oaky spice. Some slight heat surfaces as well. On the palate this beauty displays notes of black cherry, dried stemmy strawberry, crunchy black raspberry, cola, anise, tobacco, rocky yet loamy earth, earthy mineral, mocha, and allspice. This is medium-bodied with high acidity, medium (+) tannins, and a long finish characterized by lingering notes of iron.

    100% Nerello Mascalese; 14.5% ABV

June 3, 2017 - A private lunch (Restaurant The Fat Duck ***, Bray-on-Thames, UK): This has that magical balance of produndity, transparence and elegance which only old vines are able to deliver. Spicy and autumnal, volcanic minerality, macerated red berries, hints of nuttiness and undergrowth, fresh and well-balanced, ripe but grippy and grainy phenolics, stemmy and floral notes (rose, violet), long and black tea-like finish. Very individualistic, energetic but there is a certain completeness to it. But it does feel much older than it is. Tasting blind, I could have easily mistaken this for a 2005 Gevrey Premier Cru - which is meant as a compliment.

August 3, 2016 - At the winery with Giuseppe: Floral, dried rose petals, herbs, strong volcanic soil character and a touch of smoke (the lady volcano on the label!); speaking of lady volcano, this is sort of feminine, elegant, silky entry but concentrated flavors and fine ample tannins; still very mineral on the palate with a slight austere finish; complex, elegant but powerful.
