December 3, 2023 - Beautiful champagne. Definite buy again. A little sherry notes. Fine bubbles.

February 6, 2023 - Young house started in 1981. NPU is their high-end effort, as it means "there is nothing beyond" in Latin. Half Chard and PN from 6 Grand Cru villages, with 10 months in wood and 12 years on the lees. White flower and Chinese Dragon fruit in the nose. Full of personality, bright stone fruit and ginger wax make this wine quite unique for good reasons. Nuanced and complex, this wine evolves to reveal multiple flavors over the evening. Very interesting but not for everyone. It definitely expands your concept of a well-made Champagne. Feb. 2023

July 6, 2021 - Champagne & Sparklers (Calistoga): So smooth, integrated, and savory, you’d almost think this hailed from the early 90’s, but the freshness and purity push through beautifully and make for a mesmerizing and cerebral Champagne. This came off as the most resolved and approachable of all the bubbles served. It also presented as a Champagne for any occasion or season, with a versatility that could liven up an evening on the patio in the baking summer, or something you could curl up with in a winter chateau in Zermatt next to a roaring fire. Academically, I also found this to be the most interesting Champagne. It delivered bass tones without getting nutty or oxidative. In fact, the Krugs in the house came off more grilled pineapple-y and banana-y than this thing could ever think to become.

There is a notable smoky quality here that compliments the ginger, unripe peach, red apple, almond skin, and honey notes. A seamless execution of flavor. My favorite of the night given its heightened level of complexity. For those looking for more slingshot acidity and a straight chalky clock-you-in-the-jaw kind of Champagne, best look elsewhere. (For me, I only had to look as far as the neighboring bottle of 2013 Cristal sitting next to the NPU).

Disgorged September 2017. Drink now or hold. 96+ points.

January 30, 2020 - 2004 champagne horizontal (110 Taillevent London): It was getting late and I didn't like this.

January 19, 2020 - The recently released 2004 Bruno Paillard NPU is young and not showing the complexity of back vintages of NPU, it needs more cellaring. Tasted blind - A creamy array of white orchard fruits, oxidative nose from wood influence and generous autolytic notes. Good richness but needs time to gain complexity. Blend of Chardonnay and Pinot noir?
    Stroebel Trypique? (89/100)
