Community Tasting Notes 5

May 5, 2017 - Wine tasting in Greece; 4/28/2017-5/6/2017 (Athens, Santorini and Porto Heli): From the glass list at restaurant in the Peloponnese. This was okay but not as much of standout compared to other Assyrtiko wines we have tried on this trip. I think you can do much better than this for the price.

January 29, 2017 - Very smooth goes well with fish and Horta

January 15, 2017 - At cellar temperature, this had the overwhelming sickly sweet aroma of ripe pineapple. Chilling the wine improved this a bit, but it was still firmly stuck in the "off-dry" column. There were some flinty nuances but not much else. This is modestly acidic, though not enough to indicate any great staying power. Mostly, though, I am disappointed that this lacks the clean maritime minerality that makes Santorini such a great pairing with seafood. I'm sticking with the usually consistent Sigalas from here on out.

July 29, 2016 - Pale yellow lemon color with green lighlights. Intense, aromatic and quite ripe nose with aromas of lemony citrus fruits, some peach, faint smoky and even petroly nuances and a touch of rubber. Ripe, a bit sweet and quite full-bodied palate with rich flavors of lemony citrus fruits, some stony minerality, a little salinity and once again that touch of rubber. Moderate to high acidity. Juicy, intense and quite ripe finish with flavors of ripe lemon, stony minerality and a hint of rubber.

A classic example of good Santorini Assyrtiko, were there no rubbery notes. Most likely the wine had suffered a bit from reduction when it was bottled and these characteristics would have blown off with some aeration. Other than that, this was a good stuff, albeit a bit more ripe and sweet - thus easier to approach - than your typical, bracingly acidic and austere Santorini Assyrtiko. My score reflects the potential the wine exhibited under the rubbery reductive notes, not how it appeared at the tasting at the winery.
