April 14, 2024 - "Pairs with Sadness" (Chicago, IL): Been a while since I tasted this; it's very much exactly what I was expecting. The fruit is ripe, but it is done in such a controlled manner that there's nary a hint of the torrid conditions of the vintage. In Europe, the Mosel probably fared the best in the heatwave, and of course we all know the comparisons to 1959. Plenty of the Prüm minerality here -- I've always liked their execution of this vineyard in comparison to Willi Schaefer's.

By chance had this right after the Schaefer above. Remarkably electric. I tasted bananas, which I've never noted in a riesling before. When I think of this wine I picture its sweetness being held up by a thin ribbon of acidity; this is I think what people mean when they speak of tension in wines.

December 26, 2021 - Apricot, honey, minerals, relatively lower acidity owing to the vintage. Shows no real signs of decline. Delicious.

October 22, 2021 - More '03 sweet, ripe fruit here. Lower acid. Apricot and peaches for days. In some ways, more balanced and "easier" to drink than the goldkapsel right now. More minerality. Good wine with spicy sichaun dishes. 8% alc.

March 23, 2020 - J.J Prum makes two kinds of great Rieslings. First and foremost are the rich, intense, complex, and powerful wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Vineyard that usually need decades to achieve full greatness. Second, incredibly rich dessert wines made from grapes that are raisined by botrytis, usually labeled as Gold Cap and often bottled in half liter bottles. His wines from the Graacher Himmelreich Vineyard are best thought of as a relatively more affordable lower tier among the Prum wines, though still some of the best wines made from Graacher Himmelreich. This 2003 Graacher Auslese is more softly textured and not as bitingly acidic or complex as the great ones of Prum, while still highly enjoyable.
Postscript: I have thrilled to report that 18 year Prum needed even more weeks aging to achieve a rich and lush texture. So, if a Prum Reliesling is less than great when you opened it, just patiently leave it alone in the fridge for weeks to become truly superb.
