March 16, 2019 - Surprisingly developed for the year, it is fully mature and drinking like a wine a decade older. The nose is full of cherry, tobacco, and leather, and is wonderfully aromatic. As stated previously, I do find the palate lacks complexity, but at the same time is deep and layered. Personally the only barrier to a higher rating is the finish, which I find on the short side and unbalanced. Only an hour or two in the decanter is needed to enjoy this at its best.

March 11, 2019 - 5th of 24, opened an hour, perfect cork and level, developing at a glacial pace since my last bottle in October 15, after some aeration, it woke up showing attractive cool black fruit, cassis and bramble, with secondaries of graphite and tobacco, etc. unfurling effortlessly and classily, excellent grip and balance, scope for further development over many years. At least F+ (18)……..my kind of claret with everything in its place and nothing too forced!

March 10, 2019 - Same as the last one, in terms of taste. Really very good indeed. Coming soon after a bottle of 2001, what is impressive is the preciseness of the fruit compared to the latter. The 96 is very much a traditional LB, but tastes technically superior to older vintages. More recently, the 02 tastes quite similar, but it would be interesting to taste the 96 alongside the 04, which I suspect is the dark horse in the 00s.

March 2, 2019 - Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Our second bottle in as many months and maintains a consistent 93.
Well aged, spice, leather and green pepper. Good healthy fruit, round yet with lots of presence and another magnificent 96 left bank red from a vintage and style we cannot recommend enough. 93

February 28, 2019 - Still one of the best left bank 96s, and it shows no signs of tiring. It just keeps gaining more complexity and charm. Pure black currant, barnyard, tobacco, cedar, pencil lead leather on the nose. The palate is seamless, and is balanced beautifully. The acidic and tannic structure complement everything so well. Expect another solid 10-15 years from this great wine.

(Chateau Léoville-Barton St Julien) A chance to reassess this wine which seemed opulent and atypical when last tasted in April 2001. The colour is youthful although, unlike all the other wines in this flight, it has the faintest tinge of maturity. A classic nose - minerals and blackcurrant fruit, and an impressive palate - dense, sweet, intense fruit. Lovely texture, ripe tannins and correct acidity. This displays more typicity than when last assessed. Needs two or three years in the cellar.

(Chateau Léoville-Barton St Julien) Similarly dense and dark, a feature that had me mark these two wines as the pair of 1996s. Closed on the nose. Strange, very sweet pastille fruit on the palate. Good tannic structure, but not at all austere. Seems opulent and a touch New World in style. Will be interesting to see what happens to that sweet cassis fruit.
