September 25, 2019 - Classic left bank bordeaux. beautiful tobacco, earth, and red fruits on the nose. Medium bodied with great structure, reaching maturity with secondary flavors melding tobacco, leather and cassis. Still time but really in a good place now. Solid 94 points

September 3, 2019 - Acquired more than six years ago on auction from K&L. Stored in a temp and humidity controlled cellar. One sip told the story of a corked wine. Purchase notes say the wine was furnished by a collector from Oregon who purchased the wine on release according to my purchase records. Probably why I steer clear of auctions these days.

August 31, 2019 - Last dinner on the glass table (with Nick and Mary); 8/31/2019-9/1/2019 (Wedge House, Queensberry, Central Otago, New Zealand): This is a stupendous vintage for Leoville Barton. Currently drinking at the apex of its maturity, Total refinement, superb class, gorgeous integration. Supple, layered, complex.

August 25, 2019 - Dinner at Mountbatten Grill. High fill, base neck, cork is in good condition.
Deep red. Beautiful aromatics of ripe dark fruit. Generous fruit, well structured with soft tannins. Overall balanced and elegant. Wine is mature but have many years to go. A great representation of a good vintage.

August 24, 2019 - Oh this so good! Long a fan of Leoville Barton, I much prefer the 96 over 95. Really smooth, mature and resolved. Popped and poured a taste while I let the bottle andouze. A touch of cedar and soy on the front end. The mid palate is thinning a bit with maturity while it leisurely finishes with a touch of tart fruit. I will be drinking my remaining six of the next 3-5 years based on this bottle.

(Chateau Léoville-Barton St Julien) A chance to reassess this wine which seemed opulent and atypical when last tasted in April 2001. The colour is youthful although, unlike all the other wines in this flight, it has the faintest tinge of maturity. A classic nose - minerals and blackcurrant fruit, and an impressive palate - dense, sweet, intense fruit. Lovely texture, ripe tannins and correct acidity. This displays more typicity than when last assessed. Needs two or three years in the cellar.

(Chateau Léoville-Barton St Julien) Similarly dense and dark, a feature that had me mark these two wines as the pair of 1996s. Closed on the nose. Strange, very sweet pastille fruit on the palate. Good tannic structure, but not at all austere. Seems opulent and a touch New World in style. Will be interesting to see what happens to that sweet cassis fruit.
