Community Tasting Notes 9

February 23, 2024 - A very solid village NSG from a great producer. Darker with more black fruit than I expected. Not complex but goes well with a variety of foods and is a solid burg for the price. Drinking fine now. Could hold but I doubt there will be much upside.

January 14, 2023 - Medium body with dark robe. Quite fruity but somewhat one dimensional. There is a touch of interesting faint tangerine peel on the finish as well as minerality that causes me to increase an otherwise 89 to 90/91. Nice balance and smooth, easy drinker. This contradicts with my prior note from 6 months ago where it seemed tight. This seems to be in a god window now. 14pct alcohol which is higher than I’d like to see.

January 8, 2023 - Lunch with Friends (Elgin): (Tasted Blind): Earthy, tarry with deep plum cherry and black fruit, very typical of the Nuits St Georges style. The leathery texture on entry has a savoury complexity and spice on this fuller-bodied wine. Hung game, chewy with savoury notes, alongside some red cherry and blackberry, plenty of material in the middle palate gives good concentration - from a top producer. It finishes with a crushed velvet texture that appeals, with a fresh, slightly mineral edge, and the wine is very long.

November 7, 2022 - Dense, dark cherry, with an unexpected roast beef or animal edge to it. Interesting contrast to the 2018 that I have had out of .375: this was deeper, denser, but also a little clunkier. I actually thought the 2018 was slightly better right now. A harbinger of the ripe 2019 vintage overall? The 2018s have more charm - hard for me to tell which will be more long lived and the assumption that it will be the 2019 is for me a bit of a bold assertion - I can see these blowing up early.
Score: 90. Relative to expectations: +

October 10, 2022 - Janselijn Wines & Verkerk Wines Tasting (Restaurant The Lobby Fizeaustraat, Hotel V, Amsterdam, NL): Trade tasting, brief note. Floral, elegant, creamy, silky tannins, medium body, good length. Made according to the traditional Gouges recipe by the new generation, but in a more approachable fashion than yesteryear.
