December 29, 2023 - Year-end gathering with high-school friends: Heard good things about this producer but was disappointed by this bottle. Had too much warmth with plummy, jammy dark fruit. Weird mixture of vanilla and chocolate notes.

November 11, 2022 - The wife requested a burgundy to match her California Pinot taste and the Somm a suggested this wine. Pale ruby in glass. The nose certainly achieved the target with a medium+ intensity of strawberry, raspberry, nose, and vanilla, with subtle hints of smoke, cherry, licorice and game. After 45 min or so the nose subsided but returned an hour later.
It took longer for the palate to match the nose in terms of intensity. Taste of strawberry, cranberry, and currant. Dry, med acidity, med alcohol, med tannins, med- body. Med flavor intensity, med finish. The Somm mentioned 2020 is greater intensity but lesser complexity (at least at this age). A very good wine that I would drink now based on mild structure. It’s certainly enjoyable but perhaps not collectible.

June 12, 2021 - For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from the west-facing parcel in Aux Coucherias just outside Bouze-lès-Beaune. The 1er Cru was planted in the 1950s, the site is very steep and characterized by dark loam and limestone. Champy knows the vineyard from his time at Louis Jadot; because the house produces the Clos de Couchereaux there. For Champy, it is the Clos Montchovet. The Clos is isolated by trees and broom. The plot has been farmed with biodynamic practices since 1985. The cane density is around 10,000 in Guyot training. Boris Champy fermented the grapes 50% vendange entière (i.e., with stems) and 50% whole cluster, and aged in barrique for 12 months.

    Nose
Boris Champys Beaune 1er Cru Aux Coucherias 2019 combines notes of ripe cherries and dark raspberries with cocoa and licorice on the nose. On top are a few plums with a bit of vanilla. The wine appears pleasantly ripe and elegant, the wood is present but well integrated.

    Palate
Also on the palate, the notes of ripe strawberries and raspberries, lightly sprinkled with vanilla and sugar, combine with milk chocolate and oranges, a little tobacco and cinnamon in the Aux Coucherias. Characteristic here is also the extremely elegant wood, which gives the wine a decidedly sensual component. The tannin is round, almost soft, without seeming in any way plain because of it. Everything simply fits together well, the Pinot is balanced and coherent in itself.
