April 5, 2024 - November 2021 disgorgement. No dose, using 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chard. I wanted something tonight I didn't have to really get to cerebral about, something more overt with some stuffing. Decided to go with this, as it's my last one. Same moderately golden color, same as the previous bottle in 2023. This has a salted butter note, I believe coming from the wood elevage. Yeah, I know the wood is a turn off for some concerning Marguet, but I am well-aware now of what I am getting when I open/buy the wines. If the wood isn't your thing, then perhaps find something else in Ambonnay or the Bouzy slope. Back to the wine...plenty of acid here, mainly lime that drives the energy. Kiwi too, along with coconut. Given the color, and the way the apple shows to me, I'd say there is some oxidation here, and my comment from a past bottle about apple pie with cinnamon and crust is accurate again, yet the lime adds a freshening edge. Finishes with the citrus, along with some brown spice/clove. I like this, I don't love it.

March 18, 2024 - A Few Miscellaneous Wines in Burgundy, Outside of Meals and Tastings; 3/18/2024-3/24/2024: Berry and floral aromas with same berry flavors. Very crunchy textures are assertive without being overwhelming. Very good now.

December 14, 2023 - Some brass, funk, herbs, cinnamon, arrack, at the some time a briny hint and someone said ginger I think. Had this blind, and it stood out as very "natural wine" in style, guessed Horiot. Having had their rosé this summer I can clearly see their growers style especially with the herbal profile. It's not really my cup of tea though. I have no problem with several low-sulphured growers, in fact I love them, but the herbal Marguet style is not really for me. Having said that, this is nitpicking in a flight, if I had this by itself I'm sure I would've finished the bottle.

November 23, 2023 - Thanksgiving champagne, which gave me a chance to sip on this throughout the day. 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay.

Comes out with a striking golden rod color, and nice mousse. The immediate presence of an herb garden note is right there supported by, red apple, raspberry and lemon notes that are fresh but demonstrate density. Good balance, very complete and at such a young age I see good development for this.

October 7, 2023 - November 2021 disgorgement. 75/25 Pinot Noir/Chard, no dosage and no sulfur., farmed under Benoit's biodynamic program Like other disgorgements of the 2018, this has the same lightly peachy/gold color. Opened yesterday, maintained under stopper but it's worth noting that it has seen the day of trapped air. There is plenty of textural stuffing here, the wine has a plushness that it conveys. And, I like the wine more today then I did the glass or so I had last night, as the wine in total has come together. Some of the wood that is often associated with Marguet is here, in a form of clove that seasons the wine with a savory spice. Tangy citrus, fennel, lemon oil, red apple (like the bottle from a few months back) and a touch of coconut from the wood. The finish also has a tactile impression that is lightly chalky. My takeaway on the 18 Shaman is that there is a lot of stuffing here--from the wood, the acid, the fruit impressions, creating a wine that 'fills' the glass if that makes sense. To me this is drinking great now, but I do suggest letting this air some after it is opened so that the wine can evolve, as this bottle did. A lot here for in exchange for the $55 I paid for the bottles.

    September 3, 2023 - 75/25 PN/C; tirage 13/7/2019; disgorgement 11/2021, zero dosage.

The colour is one of the deepest yellows I've ever seen on a relatively young champagne.

On first opening I found this very unapproachable, with over-powering intensity of what I believe to be oak from the long time in small barrels, as well as a quite aggressive mousse.

After 30-45 minutes it settles down a bit. The nose is complex: herbal, some intensely perfumed flowers, perhaps a note like rich cider. The palate follows the nose, with also just a hint of cream; crisp, clean, complex, oaked. The finish is moderately long and slightly "woody" (in a not unpleasant way).

Overall this is clearly a food wine to be sipped and savoured, not chugged. It is interesting, complex, but the influence of the oak is perhaps a little greater than I personally prefer in my champagne. Nevertheless it is clearly an excellent example of that style.

June 29, 2023 - Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Paul (Bricco Cucina in Laguna Niguel): Served blind, paired alongside the 2011 Marguet Sapience. When the Shaman hit the glass, I had kind of a gut feeling that we might be with Shaman. January 2022 disgorgement, no dosage. 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. Just a touch of color (assume skin contact as I do not believe there is any still vin rouge added). Light herb (has the Marguet barrrique signature), red apple, lime that is zesty yet approachable. Good balance, feels complete and again affirming for me of why I like consistently Shaman.
