Community Tasting Notes 2

January 28, 2023 - Keller & Haart tasting (Concept Riesling, Düsseldorf, Germany): Citrus, layered with some herbs and some chalky minerality, seems strange for such a young wine but I think there was something nutty also.

August 31, 2021 - The Meerspinne was extracted from the Gimmeldinger Mandelgarten. The name is that of an old vineyard that produces better wines than the rest of the Mandelgarten, which is why the Meerspinne is declared Grosses Gewächs and the rest of the Mandelgarten is declared Erste Lage. The Meerspinne site has a limestone and red sandstone marl topsoil on massive limestone subsoil. Yields here are usually only 40 hl/ha, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal fullness of flavor. Harvested on 9/16/2020, the whole clusters were crushed and then slowly pressed after a maceration period of three to six hours. After spontaneous fermentation - fermentation lasted until 14/11/2020 - the wine was aged on lees and fine yeast in stainless steel and in large classic wooden barrels until bottling. It was bottled in July 2021.

In the "Mersbin", as the site was called as early as 1456, Christmann produces the most puristic Grosses Gewächse in the portfolio. This is also the case in 2020. The iodine and the fresh breeze are already in the nose. In addition, there is a light tone of oxidized apple, then also stone, herbs, rather citrus notes as well as a little nut, even walnut. The Grosses Gewächs still seems largely closed and is chalky, firm and cool with notes of broken limestone.

This cool purist impression should not deter, however, even if it continues that way on the palate at first. What impresses here is the clarity, the focus on the taut, austere, citrusy, bony and also sinewy. It is a demanding and at the same time salty as well as juicy Riesling with very good length and density.
