December 24, 2023 - I wine that I always wanted to try. Lots of blended fruit. I would decant for a few hours as I did not. I would also hold for another 2-3 years min. Cheers

September 7, 2023 - Napa day trip (Promontory, Dakota Shy, Detert) (Napa): Dark and damp earth infused with dark red fruits, and good floral aromas.

Dark red fruits, dry and clean tree bark, beautifully dry and lightly bitter earth and minerals. Nice streak of graphite. Awesome precision and balance here, with great display of fruits.

Ranked as my favorite of the lineup.

September 7, 2023 - Promontory - blind tasting. 18 Penultimate, 12 Prom and 17 Prom. 21 Prom in barrel, not part of blind tasting.

18 Pen took top nod for the blind tasting, showing great on the nose and palate. I wish this maybe could have been shown or blind, next to the 18 Prom but this goes to show you how important vintage is, whether it is Napa or BDX. To me, this is a thinkers wine and would love to blind this along with other very good Napa wines. Still more expensive than most of the high end wines in the 200-300 dollar range, but compared to the Prom, it is a rather large price difference.

April 7, 2023 - A few days in Napa with fellow CT'r Cristal2000: Black currant, unripe black cherry, and a hit of sour berry flavors lead off the charge on the 2018 Penultimate. It stayed tight and a bit wiry on the first pop of the cork, but it became much more giving after a couple of hours. Stemware was kinda cruddy, so it was a struggle at first for the wine to get into gear. However, it’s purity and chiseled frame shows that this wine is crafted with precision and assiduousness. The length on the back end becomes considerable, with the tannins clamping back down toward the final wag of the tail.

Not surprisingly, this bottle of Penultimate was much less torqued up than it hyper-taut 2018 Promontory big brother. Consider holding these bottles for another 5-7+ years. Thanks to Cristal2000 for this generous contribution.
