    February 4, 2024 - Nebbiolo at the Goldberg's

A lovely youthful and deep nose. Violet, mountain herbs, darker nebbiolo fruit, citrus, nettles, iron, and cured meats. A ton going on really. It's structured and powerful, yet delivered with finesse. Ferrous, savory and meaty on the palate. Deep and long, yet graceful. I really like how this bottling contrasts with the Brunate and Tre Tine bottlings. Youthfully delicious and a special treat. This is coming together really well. I under appreciated this in April of last year. Bravo! Thanks MB!

February 3, 2024 - Bring a Great Nebbiolo (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [Double-decanted around 6:30pm.] Lovely fragrance of violets and red fruit. Gorgeous and expansive in the mouth. This fits right in with all the 2019s I tasted this morning. Plenty of structure for the long haul, but such elegance and perfume now. 96-98.

Soleil et fraicheur, richesse spherique et tension, quel equilibre, quelle pureté!

November 29, 2023 - Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): The first vintage of this wine for Rinaldi and probably good timing as they have recently had to replant the Brunate vintage so in a few years there will be a gap where they will be back to just the two wines. Previous ownership managed the vineyard well but Marta did note that they are making changes that you can see a bit in the 2019 but perhaps more so in the later vintages. I noticed the coolness of the wine here more than the others which seems to balance out an underlying richness in the wine. More muscular. Lots of pepper. More tannin. It opened up some as we swirled (to be fair this is in maybe 5 mins as the tasting went quite quickly). There was a note of almost a red fruited liquor at the end for me. Interesting wine and another that would be fun to see the longer term evolution.

November 24, 2023 - At the winery. Tasted already from barrel, this was the first time from the bottle. Clearly different from the other two Baroli by this producer, which is good. From barrel I always got the impression that from the point of view of power and assertiveness, this was higher than the other two, overcoming the Brunate, which had always the character of a powerful and earthy wine. This one pushes power and earthy flavors even further and deeper, towards a ferrous note. Now from the bottle this has gained a lot more nuances, particularly on the nose which showed surprising complexity and finesse, even with floral elements. The power is there, but is clearly under control. All in all a wonderful surprise and a worthy addition to an already fantastic portfolio.
