August 1, 2016 - I had low expectations for this magnum given some of the write ups. This turned out to be a nice surprise.
Nose was full and nice with lots of secondary notes of leather and perfume.
Palate was smooth, refined and long. Everything integrated and the flavors were lovely. A perfectly aged wine very near it's peak.
We had this with grilled prime sirloin and it was a nice pairing.
    Would buy again.

January 7, 2012 - Upon opening, this one had a beautiful nose - black currant, cedar, a hint of licorice and some funk. The palate, however, was quite hollow with a weak, watery finish. The wine also changed rapidly in the glass. The nose blew off, and the palate became bitter. Not a good experience with this one; obviously on the downward slope.

March 19, 2011 - Betz Family Winery - 1997-2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Russell's, Bothell, WA): Initially the nose of this wine was loaded with brett. After about 15 minutes or so, with just a little swirling, the brett completely blew off. Currant and spice aromas became evident once the brett wasn't in the way anymore. The palate had flavors of plum and currant, but there was a hole in the mid-palate, and a weak finish. This was an interesting wine, and it was fun to see how quickly it changed in the glass. This was very different from the 97 that we tasted next to this, and the addition of Portteus vineyard to the blend was the only change to the fruit sources. I think that most people felt that the brett aromas were probably from the Portteus fruit. 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot sourced from Klipsun, Portteus and Harrison Hill vineyards.

March 19, 2011 - Betz Pere de Famille Vertical Tasting (+more) (Bothell): nose: a little smokier (someone said smoked paprika, so I'll go with that) and deeper on the nose compared to the alpha.
The palate had riper tannin, yet a green streak through it that I found a little odd. this seemed clumsy in comparison to the others alongside.
