Flight 1 - Starters (3 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
not many in depth notes - this had a nutty, almost sherry-like quality to it, with a viscous mouthfeel and intricate flavor. What can I say, I was distracted - I will take better notes next bottle.
Rosé
2010 Kaella Winery Rosé Ciel du Cheval Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
I don't drink a lot of rose; usually I give it a go every summer, only to get disappointed by the lack of flavor and go right back to loire valley whites. This rose, however, packed a delightful little punch.
nose: a little funky, mostly juicy, with some metal nuance
palate: a little sweet, but very tasty. Lots of flavor and some watermelon rind to complement the other melon flavors. Nice job, Dave!
White
2005 Louis Latour Chassagne-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet
pop & pour, I believe.
nose: milky caramel
palate: very dry, bracing but dirty. Amber suspected it was flawed - possible premox issue. I don't know for sure, but it wasn't showing very well, that's for certain. Unfortunately, I was not able to revisit again later.

Flight 2 - 1997-1999 (3 notes)

Red
1997 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Alpha USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
96 points
THe first wine of the Betz vertical, and the one that no one could forget at the end of the night. In fact, I don't think a single person did NOT pick this as one of the top 3 of the PdFs. A true stunner
I recall and herbal nose with precise, pure red fruit and a cedary undertone. THe palate was very young, with vivacious acid and it truly tasted the youngest of the flight. A simply fantastic wine. THere were many jokes around the table that perhaps Bob should have stopped making wine after his inaugural vintage...but thank goodness he didn't.
Red
1998 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
90 points
nose: a little smokier (someone said smoked paprika, so I'll go with that) and deeper on the nose compared to the alpha.
The palate had riper tannin, yet a green streak through it that I found a little odd. this seemed clumsy in comparison to the others alongside.

Red
1999 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
from magnum
nose: sweetest fruit, drippy and red, plus a little bit of dust
palate: there was a bandaid funk but only a smidge. I found it a bit more tired in comparison to the lively 1997, but it still performed well.

Flight 3 - 2000-2002 (3 notes)

Red
2000 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
94 points
from mag
This was my second favorite of the vertical, after the alpha. THe nose had a black fruit and herbal character, while the palate was just simply well put-together. It seemed thick, but not overbearing, complete within itself. Excellent balance. Outstanding wine.
Red
2001 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
nose: some stone, sweet pepper
palate: some greenness on the palate in comparison to what I usually expect from the cabs, but not a lot. mostly i recall a very pretty pomegranate flavor.
Red
2002 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
89 points
nose: the ripest of the bunch, I found this cab a touch imbalanced, with high perceived alcohol as well as massive tannin. high octane.

Flight 4 - 2003-2005 (3 notes)

Red
2003 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
finally got the Betz "funk" on the nose, which seems to have faded on the older bottles. there was also some menthol-lite to the aroma, plus brown sugar oak.
palate: notes missing....shoot.
Red
2004 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
92 points
nose: SWEET OAK. I don't usually yell in tasting notes, but the sweetness of the nose was certainly screaming at me from the glass. the palate seemed to lack tannin in comparison to the rest of the PDFs, and I felt like it drank easily, but perhaps a bit too fake.
this was a crowd favorite, and I see why: it was really quite delicious. to quote Jeff, "it has one only one dimension. But that dimension is Awesome." still, next to the 2005, I felt the lack of complexity detracted.
Red
2005 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
93 points
nose: caramelized fruit, bit of dill
palate: compact and structured, very dense fruit, with a plush acid and tannin. good bones and winner of the flight for me.

Flight 5 - 2006-2008 (3 notes)

Red
2006 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
Since I own several of these, I was bummed to find that the 2006 was my least favorite of the flight. It showed great fruity goodness, but it tasted a bit soft, and a slight alcohol spike was disconcerting.
Red
2007 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
the most structure of the three in the flight (06,07,08) but still quite ripe. Plummy, and tight. I see good things in this wine's future.

My favorite of the three most recent vintages, I found this to have the highest acid, purest fruit, but no goopiness. Great balance.

Flight 6 - Other Cabs (3 notes)

Red
2001 Dutch Henry Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Chafen Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
napa! well, the nose was very mountain-fruit-esque, compared to the slew of WA wines that came before it. It spoke of dill, cool mountain air, and menthol. This exhibited a smoothness the other wines in the flight did not, probably due to its age - high acid, not a lot of tannin. a total and complete contrast to the Drinkward Peschon and the QC Galitzen, I thought this was in a great spot and it was a pleasure to drink.
Red
2007 Drinkward Peschon Cabernet Sauvignon Entre Deux Mères USA, California, Napa Valley
oh, god, this was awful. Vanilla candle extract grossness. I shudder at a glass of this. dumped immediately.
Red
2006 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Red Mountain
hmmm. I don't think I like Quilceda in 2006. This tasted of cinnamon and hairspray. Others really enjoyed. I'm so glad I never purchased any.

Flight 7 - Some Blind Fun (2 notes)

Red
2000 Pepper Bridge Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
92 points
Tasted blind. Told "WA Cabernet"
I suck at guessing, so I didn't even try.
I found this to be delightful, with an herbed, caramel aroma. The palate was a little loose in the middle, but the finish was quite lovely and everlasting. This had a depth to it that was certainly missing from the second blind...
Red
2001 Matthews Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Elerding Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley
tasted blind
soft ripe fruit, raisin. Too flat and with alcohol high in the midpalate. Not really my thing.

Flight 8 - The end (2 notes)

Red
2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
*shudder* I did not enjoy this wine. It tasted like thick, goopy, alcoholic wine-flavored syrup.
Red
2005 Match Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Butterdragon Hill USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
92 points
Thank god for Match! This rescued my palate from an absolute thrashing by a 2008 Myriad. I mean, that stuff was evil, nasty, goopy stuff. This, however, had a spicy jalapeno note that was just divinely matched to caramelly oak influence. This was like a balm to my wounds, with cooling menthol and pine scents to soothe and relax. Whew. I feel OK now. Keep that Myriad away from me, please.
