Community Tasting Notes 5

May 30, 2020 - Decanted at 5 pm and tasted over the next 5 hours. Now this was a bottle of wine that had a WOW! Factor...Bright toned slightly translucent but dark garnet color with ever so slight bricking. My third taste of this with each bottle being better than the one before. This was still youthful but evolved to many layers of complexity. There was huge earthy mushroom, vanilla/oak and black currant on the nose, then on the palate there were layers of black and red plum, blackberry, tobacco, chocolate, graphite, licorice and a very long luxurious finish. Absolutely delicious and the first wine to disappear this evening. Perfect with grilled steaks. This wine had it all but was balanced and elegant as well as rich and layered. 6 more to go...purchased on closeout from the winery about 8 years ago for $30...perhaps one of the best buy’s I’ve made. Served blind this could easily pass for a 2nd or 3rd growth Bordeaux from the 1990 or 1995 vintage.

November 9, 2019 - In my cellar since the big 2012 clearance sale after the winery changed hands. Decanted at 4:30pm and enjoyed through the last drop around 9:30pm, great with grilled steaks. Tasted along side 2007 Le Macchiole Paleo Rosso and 1989 Monticello Cellars Corley Reserve Cab. Aged 28 months in new French oak and labeled as 14.7% ABV while I don’t know for sure, I am guessing this may have been a single cask bottling. Certainly modern in style but so delicious and velvety to drink it is really hard not to like. This bottle seems different than my notes from the last bottle 4 years ago. The wine is a dark, nearly opaque garnet. Nose is very complex and Bordeaux-ish. There is certainly some oak/vanilla in a prominent place but mostly integrated, along with earthy cedar, sous bois, chocolate and mint, clean and not funky or noticeably “bretty”. Nice acidity and velvety, soft texture. The palate is rich and chewy and shows more fruit than the nose especially blackberry, black plum and black currant, then rich chocolate and tobacco on the long to very long finish. So pleasurable and satisfyingly balanced in this style.

July 29, 2015 - Dark garnet, no sign of age. Nose presents fairly strong vanilla and Cherry and perhaps a hint of pine needles. Moderate tannins giving it a somewhat astringent mouth feel. On the palate you get more raspberry and cherry with vanilla and some wet stone also a pine needle or Rosemary on the finish. Great with grilled venison blackstrap!

    January 2, 2013 - Gifted to JD.

In the past I give this classy boy a 91.

I'll note if I get to try again.
