Community Tasting Notes 10

February 3, 2020 - 100% Aglianico from the historic Dal Re vineyard that is still planted with pre-phollexera vines. Aged for 18 months in French oak barriques and 5000-liter botti casks and for another 12 months in bottles.

Moderately dark and somewhat translucent blackish-red with a brick-orange hue. Dry and quite tertiary nose with aromas of beef jerky, some black tea, a little bit of smoke, light crunchy notes of cranberries and lingonberries, an autumnal hint of damp leaves and a sweet hint of marmaladey dark fruits. The wine is dense, ripe and concentrated on the palate with full body and quite developed flavors of cherry marmalade, meaty umami, some oxidative syrupy notes of molasses, a little bit of plum jam, light sanguine notes of iron and bloody game, sweet hints of ripe cranberry and stewed strawberries and a touch of gravelly minerality. The wine is still quite structured with its moderately high acidity and still rather firm and quite grippy tannins. The finish is rich, very long and moderately tannic with quite sweet flavors of raisins and prunes, some plum jam, a little bit of blackcurrant marmalade, light leathery tones, a hint of gravelly minerality and a syrupy touch of molasses.

A rich, developed and quite complex example of aged Campanian red. Based on my previous experiences with Serpico, I was surprised how much sweeter this vintage was, and while the tannins still packed quite some punch, they were noticeably softer and easier compared to, say, 2001 vintage I had tasted some time earlier. An enjoyable and intriguing wine, but doesn't reach the heights of the best vintages. Feels like at its plateau of maturity, so I doubt further cellaring won't benefit the wine much.

December 16, 2016 - Beautiful nose of fall campfire, concentrated berries, and stone. A little milder in weight, hints of red fruit punch. Silky, and herbal with wild underbrush terroir expression. Smoky, which I love. Significantly lower in tannin for what this is though, which is puzzling. Expressive, though not as much as other vintages of Serpico I've had. This bottle was sort of odd, but delicious and lovely nonetheless.

November 20, 2014 - UWS (@ JB): Beautiful bouquet with dark berries, black tea and some earth; special. On the palate tea, some sweetness and metal, chocolate, green impressions. Some length. Ready now.

November 20, 2014 - Tasting of the Utrecht Wine Society (Utrecht, NL): Fresh oregano on the nose, intense black tea, sweet fruit on the palate, tannic grip, structured, not too alcoholic (13% ABV), mature, bright finish.

November 7, 2013 - “Mixed Bag of Reds from around the World”-Tasting, Wine 6 (non-blind), in November 2013. The wine was dark garnet in colour and offered dried fruits, dark chocolate, smoke, tar, liquorice, hey, horse stable, game and wet wool on the nose. On the palate the medium- to full-bodied wine showed dried red fruits, red cherry, raspberry, red currant, raisins, sherry, gamy notes, leather, tar, smoke, dark chocolate and tea, paired with medium-plus acidity, high very fine tannin and exceptional length. I preferred the 2000, but just by a hair. A very good Aglianico; drink now and over the next three to four years.
